Depuis la Déclaration de l’Education pour tous (1990) et la signature de la Déclaration de Salamanque (1994), de nombreux pays démocratiques ont privilégié et favorisé, par la révision de leurs législations, des finalités éducatives impliquant des défis majeurs pour les acteurs de terrain. Les nouvelles directives proposent désormais que le projet de l’école pour tous repose davantage sur la prise en compte de la diversité au sein de la classe. The accessibility requirement of educational policies is a reinvention of schools beyond the education of students with disabilities. Accessibility or Reinventing Education studies the changes that have redefined the roles and missions of schools, by asking them to consider the obstacles to learning imposed on students – regardless of their particular characteristics – in order to make themselves accessible to the greatest number. This book examines the ways in which school stakeholders are addressing the need for accessibility to bring its principles to life on a daily basis. Particular attention is given to the strategies developed by teachers for creating accessible school environments, the conditions for mobilizing digital technologies, and the redefinition of relationships between teachers and their specialist counterparts. The Schedule Evaluation Tool (SET) was developed in response to these specific needs, using a visual schedule. Christian organizations have always played a large role in Canadian education. By 1949, five provinces had constitutionally protected denominational schools. The federal government’s responsibility for the education of Indigenous Peoples was effectively contracted out to the churches for more than a century, resulting in a history of abuse that has only recently come to light. From the 1950s to the 1970s, several initiatives in different provinces set the stage for significant reforms to education. Some of these tested the limits of denominational protections, but could not shake the underlying constitutional structures. Patriation of the Constitution and adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982 codified fundamental changes in thinking about civil rights. The Charter allowed existing denominational rights to be challenged on many fronts. However, all such challenges were rebuffed by the courts on the grounds that the Charter cannot be used to override other parts of the Constitution. By the 1990s, it became apparent that another route to reform was available, through the amending formula. Constitutional amendments were used to end denominational control of schools in Newfoundland and Quebec in 1997 and 1998. The circumstances around those constitutional amendments are discussed in detail as possible precedents for similar outcomes in Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. This book contends that change will certainly come to these provinces and several paths to reform are explored. This reform aims to remove the discrimination inherent in denominational institutions while preserving some form of religious involvement in certain schools.

This book examines disability, diversity, and schooling exclusion in Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Defending a social and anthropological conception of disability as a consequence of any situation that makes a subject uncomfortable and unable to live or act properly, the book explores the difficulties that disabled children face within the school system and considers how social exclusion provokes and exacerbates educational exclusion. With contributions from linguists, educational sociologists, educational psychologists, educators, and historians, the chapters focus on a range of phenomena such as the balance of languages used for teaching, gender equity, associated disorders, and the experiences of left-handed and deaf students. Ultimately, the authors demonstrate how the educational relationships built and practiced in school influence the perceptions of people with disabilities, with respect to both singular contexts and pedagogical practices. As such, it represents an important study of the relationship between school exclusion, disability, and those with precarious socio-familial conditions, and how they can be conceptualized and addressed in the context of crises.
