Book Description
Unforgettable Nevada Women is the Southern Nevada Women's History Project's third volume dedicated to recognizing the contributions of noteworthy Nevada women to the development and enrichment of the Silver State. Through interviews, public records, and private papers shared by friends and family, and collected historical accounts from newspapers and oral histories, volunteers have gathered together these stories of one hundred remarkable women. Nevada has been home to diverse and dynamic women, including the first woman owner and operator of a hotel-casino, the founder of Weight Watchers, the designer of the famous 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign, and a nun whose Angel Bread saved a much-needed hospital from closing. Also included are stories of singers, dancers, actresses, community activists, government leaders, and a world expert on organic chemistry. Within these pages are also accounts of educators, artists, an internationally known hypnotist, Native American crusaders, and a judge. Just as Skirts that Swept the Desert Floor and Steadfast Sisters of the Silver State each chronicled the lives of one hundred amazing women in Nevada history, Unforgettable Nevada Women offers a tribute to the achievements of one hundred women who have made a lasting impact on Nevada life.

Book Description
Alice Lucretia Smith, a descendent of slaves who became a civil rights activist in Reno, once said, "Let's not throw our lives away. Let's do something constructive. I always feel like I want to climb up a little bit, and maybe I can take someone with me." The eighth installment of Mountain Press's state-by-state series for teen readers, Bold Women in Nevada history reveals what women can accomplish when they dare to be bold. The book-and-bust cycles driven by Nevada's mining industry and the state's liberal stance on divorce at the turn of the century allowed women of various backgrounds to break out of traditional gender roles. Divorces didn't always remarry, and widows took charge of their husband's holdings and became landowners or started prospecting to help pay the bills. Young women not only taught in schools"€"they started their own. From Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, a Paiute who worked as an interpreter, to Mary Fulstone, a rural doctor who traveled through heat, snow, and mud to deliver more than 4,000 babies during her career, to Felice Cohn, who became the fourth female attorney to practice law before the US Supreme Court, the fourteen women featured in this collection broke down barriers of sexism, racism, and political oppression to emerge as heroines of their own time.

WINNER OF THE PEN/HEMINGWAY AWARD FOR DEBUT FICTION SHORTLISTED FOR THE VCU/CABELL FIRST NOVELIST AWARD AND LONGLISTED FOR THE CENTER FOR FICTION FIRST NOVEL PRIZE “[A] scorching desert-noir. . . . Like her nervy protagonists, Tomar is a taker of risks.” —New York Times Book Review “Breathtaking . . . For Penny and Cale, violence looms at all corners and in Tomar’s compassionate rendering, they are imbued with strength, fortitude and fierceness.” —San Francisco Chronicle Cale Lambert, a bookish loner of mysterious parentage, lives in a dusty town near the California-Nevada border, a place where coyotes scavenge for backyard dogs and long-haul truckers scavenge for pills and girls. Cale was raised by her grandfather in a loving, if codependent, household, but as soon as she's left high school his health begins an agonizing decline. Set adrift for the first time, Cale starts waitressing at the local diner, where she reconnects with Penélope Reyes, a charismatic former classmate running mysterious side-hustles to fund her dreams. Penny exposes Cale to the reality that exists beyond their small town, and the girls become inseparable—until one terrifying act of violence shatters their world. When Penny vanishes without a trace, Cale must set off on a dangerous quest across the desert to find her friend, and discover herself. An audacious debut, told in deftly interwoven chapters, A Prayer for Travelers explores the complicated legacy of the American West and the trauma of female experience.

Book Description
The manuscript is a collection of short stories that were originally prepared as part of a radio program that began in the early 1980's as a summer informational and educational program for Tahoe area residents and tourists. Between 1982 and 1985 the author presented more than one hundred radio tales about Tahoe’s history and the environment over Tahoe radio station KTHO AM-590. Lane returned to the radio airways in 1995, this time with radio station KOWL AM-1490, and has since broadcast more than two thousand tales (“Don Lane’s Tales of Tahoe”). The manuscript is a distinctive mixture of stories about the events, large and small, that shaped and changed the region, and simple stories about the people that once lived in our region during the past 150-years. Stories about pioneer men and women, gold-seekers and adventurers. Tales about the unique characters; the famous like the Donner’s, Mark Twain, John Sutter and James Marshall, and John Fremont, along with the powerful and the forgotten. The manuscript weaves serious history with light-hearted tales with a minimum of editorializing, as the emphasis has been on maintaining historical integrity and authenticity. The stories, gathered from old journals, archives and historical records are both entertaining, and educational. And hopefully too, this manuscript will contribute to an increased awareness of our regional history and a greater appreciation for those people that have been lost inside the pages of history.
