(as a last resource). Justifying a line should be performed by spacing each line out with equal tightness, but not to such a degree as to pre vent the stick being emptied easily. Good justification, so as to allow a handful or page of type being lifted without dropping a single letter, is evidence of the careful workman. Let the learner now place himself at the frame and take the composing stick, which has been made up to the required measure, in the left hand. It should be laid loosely in the palm of the hand, the thumb touching the brass setting rule placed against the bottom of the stick. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Typography: A Treatise on Title Pages, With Numerous Illustrations in Facsimile and Some Observations on the Early and Recent Printing of Books The facsimiles here reproduced show more plainly than by words that uniformity of style in the treatment of all titles is neither possible nor desirable. Those who seek for distinctiveness should find here exhibits of odd arrangements which may be used to advantage in some new books. The skill with which an expert can vary the treatment of the same words is well exhibited in the chapter on A Tith page in Ten Styles, the illustrations of which were kindly contributed for this treatise by Mr. Charles T. Jacobi of the Chiswick Press of London. Odd arrangements are often required, and a printer should be qualified to produce them in an acceptable manner, but he should never forget that in all standard books, and even in many ordinary pamphlets, the gen eral preference is for the title-page of severe simplicity. In Chapter XII some remodelled title-pages, much unlike in matter and manner, have been presented to show that a few sizes of properly selected roman types are enough to give fit expression to the words of the author. Their arrangement of display lines may not please prevailing tastes. It is possible to rearrange these lines neatly by other methods, but it will be admitted by all that they are more easily composed as here presented, and that they will be acceptable to the reader as well as to the author, even if they do violate some antiquated rules. The purpose of the remodellings is to encourage a taste for the simplicity which should be the first purpose of the compositor. Excerpt from Practical Text Book of Lithography: A Modern Treatise on the Art of Printing From Stone In ofiering this book to the lithographic workers the writer believes that he is benefiting the art. He makes no pretense of originality, because the process was dis covered and perfected before he was born, but there has always been a demand for a concise, clear and practical text book to which the worker could turn when a question arose as to the best mode of procedure. We believe that this book will meet that demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
As printing from movable type was perfected in the fifteenth century, the mysteries of its practice were guarded by a privileged few. The rapid spread of the new art depended on the reliable mechanism for transferring knowledge. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the pioneers of manufacturing technology and scientific inquiry were prying away at trade secrecy. This book shows the history of printing manuals from 1683 to the end of the nineteenth century, including some of the rarest in existence from the Cary Collection at Rochester institute of Technology.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Triumphs of the Printing Press The book, however, does not pretend to be in any sense a full record of the work which has developed from the discovery of the mid-fifteenth century; such full record would manifestly be impossible within the limits of a small volume, despite the scantiness of materials about some of the more interesting periods in the growth of the Printing Press. For, although printing has not troubled properly and connectedly to record its own development, there is yet a great wealth of varied materials concerned with its triumphs. From among these I have chosen such portions as shall show the growth of the art, from the simple types and plain wooden press of the time of Gutenberg, up to the present day, when steam machinery works many thousand times as quickly as did the old hand-presses; when, indeed, the very art of printing from movable types appears likely to give way to a later development, in which the printing is almost directly done from the matrices themselves. It will be noticed by the reader of the following. Chapters how few are the details which have come down to us of the lives of those men who are most intimately connected with the triumphs dealt with - Gutenberg, Caxton, Wynkyn de Worde, Aldus, Elzevir. Of these men and several others we would gladly learn much; we would like to know what manner of men they were, what lives they led, and what their contemporaries thought of them. The fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were not, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
First realized commercially in the late eighteenth century, stereotyping—the creation of solid printing plates cast from moveable type—fundamentally changed the way in which books were printed. Publishing Plates chronicles the technological and cultural shifts that resulted from the introduction of this technology in the United States. The commissioning of plates altered shop practices, distribution methods, and even the author-publisher relationship. Drawing on archival records, Jeffrey M. Makala traces the first uses of stereotyping in Philadelphia in 1812, its adoption by printers in New York and Philadelphia, and its effects on the trade. He looks closely at the printers, typefounders, authors, and publishers who watched small, regional, artisan-based printing traditions rapidly evolve, clearing the way for the industrialized publishing industry that would emerge in the United States at midcentury. Through case studies of the publisher Mathew Carey and the American Bible Society, one of the first publishers of cheap Bibles, Makala explores the origins of the American publishing industry and American mass media. In addition, Makala examines changes in the notion of authorship, copyright, and language and their effects on writers and literary circles, giving examples from the works and lives of Herman Melville, Sojourner Truth, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman, among others. Incorporating perspectives from the fields of book history, the history of technology, material culture studies, and American studies, this book presents a rich, detailed history of an innovation that transformed American culture.
