In the 1860s the Smoky Hill Trail was the major road from the Missouri River in eastern Kansas to the new city of Denver, Colorado Territory, and the gold fields of that Rocky Mountain region. It is also the story of two other groups of people - the Native Americans who fought to protect their livelihood, the grand herd of American Bison, or buffalo, and the United States military troopers who stood in the gap between the American immigrants and the Natives.
