Book Description
Microconstituents in the Environment Comprehensive introduction to managing novel pollutants commonly released into the environment through industrial and everyday processes Microconstituents in the Environment: Occurrence, Fate, Removal and Management provides the readers with an understanding of the occurrence and fate of microconstituents, pollutants that have not previously been detected or regulated under current environmental laws or may cause known or suspected adverse ecological and/or human health effects even at insignificant levels, covering their presence in the environment and possible management strategies. The text is practice-oriented and evaluates a wide range of technologies for pollutant removal and how to implement them in the field. In Microconstituents in the Environment, readers will find information on: Fundamental ideas regarding microconstituents, including their classification, major sources, and detection methods, and their removal via biological treatment techniques Fate and transport of microconstituents in various environmental domains, including mathematical modeling based on remote sensing techniques Physicochemical treatment techniques for microconstituents, including precipitation, absorption, filtration, membrane separation, and oxidation Sustainability and environmental management, including the regulatory framework and requirements for developing a new field application, plus an outlook on green design concepts With its emphasis on management and remediation, Microconstituents in the Environment is a highly useful one-stop resource on the subject for environmental scientists, modelers, government agencies, and research scientists working in the field of environmental pollution.

Book Description
The treatment, management, and application or disposal of sludge is currently a major problem all over the world. However, solutions vary from one region to another and must be based on the technical and economical capacities of each country. Thus this issue reflects the special emphasis put on knowing the characteristics of sludges and their differences according to whether they come from a developed or a developing country, or from one region or another. A broad range of sludge stabilisation techniques were considered, ranging from low-cost and easy-to-operate technologies, to highly technological and costly alternatives, with local circumstances in mind. Sludge minimisation processes focus on solutions that avoid the problems, but it is clear that there will always be sludge generation and thus beneficial reuse should still be encouraged. Land application in developed and developing countries is included to present the perception of this alternative under different scenarios, comparing, for example, the experiences in countries like France and the United States, with those of Brazil and Greece. Similar international comparisons are given of management and regulatory regimes. Alternative processes give a rapid vision of non-conventional options that may constitute an interesting approach to sludge reuse. with the intention of satisfying the needs in different parts of the world. From the high-quality programme of this conference 41 papers have been selected after peer review. They provide an authoritative and wide-ranging survey of the state of research and practice in sludge management that will be an essential source of information of worldwide value.

Book Description
The book summarizes and reviews the environmental and human safety of two classes of nonionic surfactants-alcohol ethoxylates (AE) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE). This unique resource contains critical data from published sources as well as from unpublished studies submitted by Soap and Detergent Association member companies. It reviews information on product chemistry and analysis, biodegradation, environmental levels (including fate and distribution), aquatic toxicity, and human safety. Recently developed analytical techniques for the extraction, separation, detection, and measurement of nonionic surfactants and their metabolites in environmental samples are described. Results of biodegradation studies performed with a variety of test systems are tabulated, as are results of field studies at wastewater treatment plants. Reported comparisons of environmental levels with results of acute and chronic aquatic toxicity tests are provided. The information on the toxicity and irritation potential of AE and APE surfactants includes data from in vitro, mammalian, and human studies.

Book Description
This book introduces the 3R concept applied to wastewater treatment and resource recovery under a double perspective. Firstly, it deals with innovative technologies leading to: Reducing energy requirements, space and impacts; Reusing water and sludge of sufficient quality; and Recovering resources such as energy, nutrients, metals and chemicals, including biopolymers. Besides targeting effective C,N&P removal, other issues such as organic micropollutants, gases and odours emissions are considered. Most of the technologies analysed have been tested at pilot- or at full-scale. Tools and methods for their Economic, Environmental, Legal and Social impact assessment are described. The 3R concept is also applied to Innovative Processes design, considering different levels of innovation: Retrofitting, where novel units are included in more conventional processes; Re-Thinking, which implies a substantial flowsheet modification; and Re-Imagining, with completely new conceptions. Tools are presented for Modelling, Optimising and Selecting the most suitable plant layout for each particular scenario from a holistic technical, economic and environmental point of view.

Book Description
This book provides comprehensive, authoritative discussions about microbial communities in environments that are rich in hydrocarbons, crude oil or lipids. It encompasses natural environments, such as tar sands, oil seeps and reservoirs, as well as habitats where methane is produced. Equally, the book deals with habitats that have been influenced by human activity, including oil-contaminated soils, aquifers, coast and seas. The book opens with a series of chapters considering the contemporary approaches used to investigate microbial communities.
