Book Description
One of life's most confusing periods is adolescence. The hormones are raging. The body and mind are in constant flux. And it's a time to start taking responsibility for life and find a way out of the nest. But it's also a phase packed with miscues, negative influences, and constant danger. Life at this age of false invincibility can feel like a big game. Albert Lee Daw, MD, FACS, wants to show youth how to survive as unscathed as possible. He reveals the most common and surprising traps that youth fall into, such as the three thousand fatalities per year from car crashes and the allures and long-term damages of smoking and substance abuse. As a retired trauma and general surgeon, he's seen far too many injuries from teenagers' boldness in the face of danger, and he wrote this book to shine some light on how those dangers can be avoided. Parents and teenagers alike will find it an eye-opening and informative read that provides guidance as well as an invaluable opportunity for dialogue between adults and youth. Knowing the facts makes danger far less attractive, so focus on the important things. Don't just survive the game—win!

Book Description
Excerpt from Traps for the Young Before any one consents to introduce a work written by another, three questions should be settled. These are: Is a book upon the subject needed? Is this book adapted to be useful? Is the author a person whose testimony is trustworthy and one who can be commended to the favorable consideration of those who respect the writer of the proposed introduction? Nor are these all the questions which naturally arise; for unless there be something said in the introduction which is not contained in the body of the work, it is superfluous to write anything but a simple word of commendation. Yet it would not be legitimate to introduce wholly foreign matter. Consenting to write the introduction to Mr. Comstock's work, implies that I have determined these inquiries in the affirmative. The difference between an ingenuous and uncorrupted youth and one in whom vicious tastes and appetites have usurped dominion over the better nature, is as great as that between a healthy human body and one infected with a loathsome disease. It is a radical unlikeness as great as that which exists between an angel and a demon. The absence of knowledge of evil in youth has much more to do with innocence than many seem to fancy. For the passions are automatic and unreasoning; their uprisings are apparently natural, and when an evil thought is suggested to the mind of a youth who is unaccustomed to analysis and a creature of impulse, it becomes a self-propagating seed of impurity. Book Description
A detailed account of how gender is learned and unlearned in the home From the selection of toys, clothes, and activities to styles of play and emotional expression, the family is ground zero for where children learn about gender. Despite recent awareness that girls are not too fragile to play sports and that boys can benefit from learning to cook, we still find ourselves surrounded by limited gender expectations and persistent gender inequalities. Through the lively and engaging stories of parents from a wide range of backgrounds, The Gender Trap provides a detailed account of how today’s parents understand, enforce, and resist the gendering of their children. Emily Kane shows how most parents make efforts to loosen gendered constraints for their children, while also engaging in a variety of behaviors that reproduce traditionally gendered childhoods, ultimately arguing that conventional gender expectations are deeply entrenched and that there is great tension in attempting to undo them while letting 'boys be boys' and 'girls be girls.'
