Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Education Method and Other Papers on Education The publication, in a collected form, of the papers included in this volume may not be without value at the present critical juncture of educational affairs when so many serious attempts are being made to bring our school system into harmony with the times and'to improve the methods of teaching. The earlier articles are didactic: in these I have sought to give reasons for the introduction of scientific method into all schools. The later articles are con structive: they contain the suggestions which, from time to time, I have ventured to make for the improve ment of the methods of teaching elementary physical science. Whilst the former may be of interest to the general reader, the latter will appeal more to the specialist. Book Description
Excerpt from Methods in Education Usage puts a preface in every text-book and so you find one here. But the measure of value is in the body of the'text, not in the preface. The gateway is not a true criterion of the fruits in the field. The books on school methods can be easily classified. Some rest upon the abstract theories of psychology, exalting rigid formality; some present mere outlines in logical forms, leaving the student to find and adapt the subject-matter; others elabo rate particular methods suited to the respective subjects of instruction. All these are good, but still the young student wavers beneath the uncertainty of knowing exactly what to do. Hence, this book is prepared to satisfy the actual needs of teachers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Education Method and Other Papers on Education In reprinting these essays, I have done little more than make a few verbal corrections, besides adding a prefatory essay and two articles, Nos. 25 and 26. It is an agreeable surprise to me that a new edition is called for. I-trust that this issue may not be without influence on the spread of scientific teaching in schools. I must confess to feeling much disappointment that our cause has not made more progress of late years - indeed that it has suffered repression rather than encouragement. It is unfortunate that more has not been done to impress on teachers the importance of developing the right attitude of mind in their pupils, that inspectors will insist on so much being learnt and show so little appreciation of the value of method. If boys and girls left school properly aware what an experiment is, what is involved in making one, how very far from easy it is to make a real experiment; if they acquired a true sense of exactness in work and in argument: the teaching given in schools would be of great value in after-life, as life is one big never-ending experiment. I see no reason why there should be school laboratories if the main purpose of these be. not to give training in the art of inquiry. Book Description
Excerpt from The Project Method of Teaching This book is devoted mainly to a critical discussion of the project method of teaching. The term project has only recently made its appearance in educational terminology, but the idea back of the project is not new. It is quite probable that skillful teachers have always used the essential features of the project method. A survey of modern teaching methods in engineering, law, medicine, agriculture, as well as in the prescribed subjects of the school curriculum, shows that much effort is being expended to bridge the chasm between school tasks and activities outside the school. In other words, the project idea, as defined by the author, is attempted to some extent in all these fields. Book Description
Excerpt from A New Discovery of the Old Art of Teaching School The editor of these reprints has cheerfully given time and thought to the presenting of two English seventeeth century writers upon education, to American readers. The publisher on his part bears the entire cost of copying from the original editions in the British Museum Library and the risk of the possible small sale of a volume dealing with times distant from our own. A large number of American educators gave such gracious welcome to the editor when recently visiting them and their schools for the purpose of reporting upon what he saw, that he is desirous in every way not of repaying the debt but of showing his grateful remembrance. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Education This book is the outgrowth of twelve years of class room instruction, supplemented by other work in the train ing of teachers. It is an attempt to present with logical cogency a simple and definite system of principles for guiding educational thought and practice. Elaboration useless for this practical purpose has been avoided. Attention should be called especially to two character istics of this discussion of the principles of education. (1) Man is here regarded as a person who seeks to attain purposes through means of control and also as a psycho physical organism in a process of adjustment to environ ment through stimuli and responses; but these two points of View, the confusion of which has led to much erratic thinking in the field of education, have been kept distinct. (2) The importance in the educative process of the appreciation of values is here emphasized as much as is the importance of the knowledge of facts, by which appreciated values may be attained. In this connection, the essential nature and function of history and of liter ature and the other fine arts are explained, and the methods in accordance with which this subject matter should be taught are definitely presented. Book Description
Excerpt from The Training of Teachers and Methods of Instruction: Selected Papers The first occupant of a Chair new to the Universities of Great Britain is placed in a somewhat peculiar position. It may be fairly expected of him not merely to correlate the new subject with the other studies of a University, but to vindicate for it a right to the promotion which it has obtained, to explain its bearing on the educational interests of the country at large, and to satisfy the sceptical as to its direct utility. Were I, however, to undertake to maintain a thesis so large, I should weary even the well-disposed listener, and probably fail, after all, to convince or convert the unfriendly. A broad treatment of the subject would involve me in a range of argument, fact, and illustration, so wide and varied, that I think it better to assume very much on the general question.
