The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between exercise self-efficacy and the Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change) among employees of a large global retail chain corporate headquarters. There were approximately 800 employees in this office, of which all were surveyed. The instrument asked the participants 35 different questions. The survey was broken down into five different sections. The first section examined the current stage of stage each subject. The second section had the subject answer questions on their perceived health and assessed their exercise self-efficacy. The third and fourth sections had the subject answer questions regarding his/her exercise self-efficacy expectations and outcome. The answers to the questions were based on a Likert scale. The final section examined the subject's demographic information. "The purpose of this study was to examine the influence stage-matching interventions had on stages of change, exercise self-efficacy and the transition from one stage to another in contemplators and preparers participating in lifestyle physical activity. Ten novice male (n=10) and female (n=9) exercisers completed lifestyle activity on their own time and attended biweekly one-hour stage-matched class sessions during a 10-week study. Participants were assessed for stages of change, exercise self-efficacy and cardiorespiratory endurance during the first and tenth week of the study. Cardiorespiratory endurance was measured by a one-mile walk test. They received stage-matched workbooks in addition to attending the class sessions. The Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks test showed significance difference for stages of change (p=.0117) but not for exercise self-efficacy (p=.0580). The Spearman Rank Order Correlation showed a relationship between stages of change and exercise self-efficacy (p=.0331). A paired t-test was used to analyze cardiorespiratory endurance and showed no significance (p=.7530). The results seem to indicate that stage-matching intervention is a valid tool for exercise behavior change"--Document.

Participation in regular physical activity and consumption of a balanced diet have been shown to produce numerous health benefits. Despite many benefits, the majority of the American population does not meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity and nutrition behaviors. Worksite settings represent a potentially ideal setting through which health behavior interventions can be delivered. The majority of the population is employed and worksites typically involve individuals from various stages of life, which allows for programs to be broad-reaching. Understanding the theoretical underpinnings of physical activity and nutrition behaviors is important to guide future physical activity and nutrition promotion programs. Interventions that have been conducted in worksite settings in the past have been criticized for having poor design and lacking theoretical guidance. As such, the present study prospectively examined the social cognitive influences of physical activity and nutrition behaviors in a sample of university employees (N=179). The longitudinal associations of social cognitive constructs with physical activity and nutrition behaviors were examined using a panel analysis and standard covariance modeling framework. Baseline relationships supported the use of a comprehensive social cognitive framework to explain physical activity behavior. Over time, change in self-efficacy was the only significant predictor of change in physical activity behavior. Nutrition results were not as robust, though patterns did emerge to suggest that social cognitive variables may be important in predicting this behavior. By identifying potential models of theoretical constructs associated with physical activity and nutrition, this study has implications for behavior intervention design and implementation in worksite settings. Further research examining the consistency of these theoretical models for physical activity and nutrition in worksite setting is warranted.
