Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of Bookkeeping It is then very easy to see that the difference between these two sides represents what we have left, the remainder or balance in our hands This balance changes with every change made on either side. If we receive more the balance rises, if we spend more it sinks; but it is quite clear that we cannot in hard cash spend more than we have got; so that the Cr. Side can never become larger than the Dr. Side; it can only become equal to it, and then our balance becomes nil, we have nothing left. Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of Accounts It is now a dozen years since Colonel Sprague issued his first edition of "The Philosophy of Accounts," and a number of years since death terminated his career of unusual activity and achievement. As the years pass by the truly fundamental nature of his teaching and writing along lines of accounting and investment becomes more clear. In the subject of accounting particularly, which has developed with giant strides in that interval, it is surprising how accurately his logical mind outlined fundamental points of theory accepted as common enough now, but hardly more than mathematical generalizations when they were advanced by him. It has been well said that Sprague stands as the first American writer on the subject of modem accounting theory. Colonel Sprague's work on "The Philosophy of Accounts," therefore, stands today as a classic of American accounting literature. Even in its fragmentary form of a twenty-one chapter discussion with two short monographs on the Cash account and the Merchandise account, it presents a most remarkable and complete piece of consistent logical reasoning. Other writers have elaborated the principles so clearly set forth by Colonel Sprague, and the development of technique has moved far beyond anything that was thought of in the days when "The Philosophy of Accounts" was written. Nevertheless, the principles will stand as he set them forth, and every accountant whose professional training is complete is supposed to have read this work in its original form. For these reasons the publishers are bringing out this edition of "The Philosophy of Accounts." Preceding the text of the discussion are four short tributes from men who knew Colonel Sprague well when he was still actively engaged in educational work. Following this is the discussion proper. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Modern Bookkeeping His book does not profess to deal exhaustively with the subject of Bookkeeping as an art, attention being concentrated on its spirit, rather than on its form. All systematic bookkeeping is based on a principle, but on one which modern abbreviations necessarily tend to obscure. The book is an attempt to set forth this principle, and to show that, however obscured it may be, yet it exists, and must be thoroughly grasped by anyone who would become proficient in the art. Such forms as are employed are used only to illustrate the text - they are not given as dogmatic instances of how any particular book keeping problem should be solved. The principle is explained and insisted upon, and it is left to the reader, or his teacher, to apply this principle in any desired direction. I have received, and gratefully acknowledge, valuable criticisms and help from Mr. T. G. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Double-Entry Bookkeeping What I claim for the book is that it solves the problem of placing double-entry bookkeeping upon a rational basis; and to the best of my knowledge and belief it presents the first and only solution of that problem. It is one of the strangest things in the history of the arts and sciences that this great system of accounting, which, by reason of its compactness and convenience, has come into almost universal use, should have attained so high a degree of development on the practical side, while on the theoretical side it is and always has been in a state of utter confusion. As a rule, the study of a useful art has a certain value as mental discipline; the art of accounting is the one exception to the rule. Aside from the so-called occult sciences, there is nothing which so tends to bewilder the mind and to dull the faculty of reason as the study of double-entry bookkeeping in the form in which it is customary to present it. Book Description
Excerpt from Mayhew's Practical Book-Keeping: Embracing Single and Double Entry, Commercial Calculations, and the Philosophy and Morals of Business 6. The wife or daughter might, in many instances, very properly keep the books of the husband or father, whose time is absorbed in the pursuits of a laborious profession, and thus not only save the expense of a clerk, but transact the business of the household more satisfactorily, and have the pleasure of contributing to the comfort and happiness of the family, as well as to its pecuniary interests. Woman, when not otherwise employed, may also properly enter the counting-room, and engage with father and brothers in its quiet duties, for the discharge of which she is as well fitted by nature as they. She thus acquires a knowledge of busi ness, and if bereft of husband or father, upon whom too many females are entirely dependent for support, she may be enabled herself to conduct the business advantageously, or to close it without loss.
