Book Description
Correspondence, reports, financial documents and one legal notice compose the Personal papers of Sam Houston. Of three letters sent by him, two are autograph copies and only one is signed. Correspondents include Joseph L. Bennet, Eber Worthington Cave, John Forbes, James Hawkins, M.T. Johnson, Philip Martin, Benjamin McCulloch, James Hazard Perry, Robert Potter, Thomas J. Rusk, William Read Scurry, Ashbel Smith and William Stanhope. Many letters and other memoranda record first person accounts of the Battle of San Jacinto. An August 28, 1857 newspaper clipping from the Galveston News records a contrary account of the battle by Capt. Jesse Billingsley. One report is a handwritten transcription of a speech made by a Comanche Chief in 1846. Typed transcripts of letters are separated from the originals and arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Transcripts of reports are also arranged in a separate sub-series.
