In the first place, when in 1915 they honoured me with an invita tion to be a Haskell Lecturer and suggested for topic The Originality of the Christian Message, ' they opened up for me afresh a singularly fruitful field of inquiry, the captivating interest of which went to alleviate the distrae tions and anxieties arising out of the Great War. Book Description
Excerpt from The Message and the Messengers: Lessons From the History of Preaching And this not from vainglorious motives. No eloquence was ever actuated by purer and more unselfish motives than that of Demosthenes; and yet this reaction of an audience, trained to a high ideal of public speaking, Jevons justly considers one of the three great causes of his perfection. It was the cultivated ideal of their congregations which stimulated the efforts of Bossuet and Massillon. And to-day no course would prove more effective in elevating the character of the sermon than to foster a higher ideal and a more insistent demand among the Christian laity. The author believes that a popular, but careful, account of the history of preaching, such as he now tries to give, will arouse the interest of the laity and help to educate their ideal. There is reason to believe that the pulpit needs improvement. The charge that the American pulpit is declining was made by a writer in the Forum a few years ago. I then made a laborious investigation of the case, corresponding with many of the leading authorities of several denominations; and while I became convinced that the censure cannot be sustained, still I found grave reason to believe that ministers need a more thorough training in the art of preaching. Book Description
Excerpt from The Christ of the Gospels I have sought to carry out the purpose of the Founder of this Lecture as indicated in the Trust Deed, and, with others, I have found it difficult in a single treatise to meet the needs of a popular audience, and to satisfy the demands of those already versed in biblical study and criticism. The subject committed to me is one which will exhaust powers far greater than those which I possess, but such study as I have been able to secure has convinced me of its supreme importance at the present time, and I have endeavoured to bring before those who have entered into the Methodist Com munion of the Christian Church the findings of recent criticism of the Gospels, and to indicate the effect of such criticism on the message which those Gospels declare. Book Description
Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability.
