Book Description
Emily Pomona Edson Briggs (1830-1910) was an American journalist and one of the first women to acquire a national reputation in the field. When her husband John R Briggs, whom she had married around 1854, was appointed as assistant clerk of the US House of Representatives in 1861, Emily discovered a talent for observing and commenting on the political scene. Her letter to the Washington Chronicle defending the employment of women in government caught the attention of the paper's owner and she was hired to write a daily column. She published her pieces under the pseudonym Olivia, contributing to the Chronicle and its sister paper the Philadelphia Press for over 20 years. Her comments on public affairs were always incisive and whilst paying some attention to society and fashion, her column was quite unusual for a female journalist of the day. During the Lincoln administration she became the first woman to report directly from the White House, becoming personally close to the Lincoln family, and later she was among the first to be admitted to the congressional press gallery. She was elected first president of the Women's National Press Association upon its organization in 1882 and in later years became a noted Washington hostess. This collection of her columns was first published in 1906.

Book Description
Olivia Gardner, a northern California teenager, was severely taunted and cyber-bullied by her classmates for more than two years. News of her bullying spread, eventually reaching two teenage girls from a neighboring town, sisters Emily and Sarah Buder. The girls were so moved by Olivia's story that they initiated a letter-writing campaign to help lift her spirits. It was a tender gesture of solidarity that set off an overwhelming chain reaction of support, encouragement, and love. In Letters to a Bullied Girl, Olivia and the Buder sisters share an inspiring selection of messages that arrived from across America—the personal, often painful remembrances of former targets, remorseful bullies, and sympathetic bystanders. Letters to a Bullied Girl examines our national bullying epidemic from a variety of angles and perspectives, and includes practical guidance from bullying expert Barbara Coloroso, author of The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander. Though addressed to Olivia, the letters speak to all young people who have been bullied, offer advice and hope to those who suffer, and provide a wake-up call to all who have ever been involved in bullying.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... BACHELORS AND WIDOWERS. Congressmen Speer, Clymer, Ackley And O'neill. 'Washington, January 15, 1880. "Birdie, oh, come and live with me; You shall be happy--you shall be free." Contrary to all precedents of the past, the coming-of Congress has had little or no effect on the matrimonial market, although it is confidently believed that Charley O'Neill is holding a vast amount of "stock." Notwithstanding the danger and difficulties of carrying this weight, he has decided to enact the role of the immortal Don Quixote, and has already planted the banner of his famous predecessor on the soil of the capital of the New World. But lest Philadelphia take umbrage at this unnatural exploit, as it looks like spurning the city of his beloved soul, he wishes it understood that had he fixed Philadelphia as a starting-point he would have been confined by the meshes of the Camerons, whereas Washington, being the centre of civilization, offers facilities that cannot be breached until the farthest limit of the whole country is reached. As matters now stand, there isn't a maid or widow at the capital whose heart is not pit-apat, and even married women are providing against a morning of storm which might close in perpetual sunshine. Already the first celebrated battle has been fought, and contrary to the usage of ancient chivalry. But as this is a different age, and bottom side the globe as to Spain, it must not be expected that ancient rules will be followed. When Charley O'Neill attacked the windmills the other day in the House it was found that he had hit Sam Randall in disguise. When he learned that he had got the wrong pig by the ear, he soon scattered his forces and comforted himself by thinking, if he had not destroyed a windmill of which Philadelphia...
