Book Description
Excerpt from The Meaning of Pictures: Six Lectures Given for Columbia University at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Just how we should look at pictures, just how we should judge of them, is not for any one person to say. We all have our different ways of estimating art; and art is capable of being estimated in different ways. In these lectures I have endeavored to set forth the various points of view. The painter's conception has received perhaps the primary attention, but I have given the public's conception of the picture also. Nor do I mean to apologize for arguing both sides of the case. Art might be better understood, if there were less special pleading and theorizing about it. It is so largely dependent upon the individual make-up of the artist, that any precise theory about it must fall short of the mark. Instead of quarrelling over terms and trying to put the opposition in the wrong, it would be better frankly to examine the product in the light of the producers intention and draw our conclusions from that. We should not always agree, but that is all the more reason for tolerance and liberality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
The Meaning of Pictures by Professor John C. Van Dyke. This volume is from the pen of the well known author of "Art for Art's Sake" and "Nature for its Own Sake". It contains six lectures given for Columbia University at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. One of the attractive things about all the works of Professor Van Dyke is that he avoids all technical language. His discussions of art are all put in such language that the layman can read and understand. To the average reader this is of supreme importance and always adds to the pleasure of study. The lectures appear under the following titles: Truth in Painting, Individuality or the Personal Element, Imagination of the Artist, Pictorial Poetry, The Decorative Quality, and Subject in Painting. All will appreciate the value and weight of the author's principles of criticism, although all may not agree with him in his conclusions. He says that just how we should look at pictures, just how we should judge of them, is not for any one person to say. "We all have our different ways of estimating art; and art is capable of being estimated in different ways. In these lectures I have endeavored to set forth the various points of view. The painter's conception has received perhaps the primary attention, but I have given the public's conception also. Art might be better understood if there were less special pleading and theorizing about it." The book is abundantly illustrated and there is not a dull page in it. --The Auburn Seminary Review, Volume 7
