In the light of growing insights into the universal temporal-semantic nature of aspectual distinctions, today's aspectology has broadened its attention from restrictedly event-defining functions of aspect on the sentence level towards its primary perspectival functions on the discourse/situation level. Hereby it attempts to relate these functions to each other in ways that stimulate consistently language processing on a more solid perceptual-conceptual and pragmatic basis. Reflecting in various ways this general tendency. In Verbal Aspect in Old Church Slavonic Jaap Kamphuis demonstrates that the aspect system of Old Church Slavonic can best be described if one divides the verbs into three main categories: perfective, imperfective and anaspectual. This differs from the traditional division into perfective and imperfective verbs only. To support the categorization, the study contains a corpus-based quantitative and qualitative analysis of the available Old Church Slavonic data. This analysis contributes to a better understanding of the development of aspect in Slavic. Kamphuis shows that aspect in Old Church Slavonic functions more like verbal aspect in the Western groups of Slavic languages (e.g. Czech) than verbal aspect in the Eastern group (e.g. Russian).

The volume presents an overview of recent cognitive linguistic research on Slavic languages. Slavic languages, with their rich inflectional morphology in both the nominal and the verbal system, provide an important testing ground for a linguistic theory that seeks to motivate linguistic structure. Therefore, the volume touches upon a wide range of phenomena: it addresses issues related to the semantics of grammatical case, tense, aspect, voice and word order, it looks into grammaticalization and language change and discusses sound symbolism. The book of Revelation is well-known for its grammatical infelicities. More specifically, Revelation exhibits apparently "odd" use of Greek verb tenses. Most attemtps to describe this "odd" use of verb tenses start with the assumption that Greek verb tenses are primarily temporal in meaning. In order to explain Revelation's apparent violation of these temporal values, scholars have proposed some level of semitic influence from the Hebrew tense system as making sense of this "odd" use of tenses. However, recent research into verbal aspect, which calls into question this temporal orientation, and suggests that Greek verb tenses grammaticalize aspect and not time, has opened up new avenues for explaining the Greek verb tense usage in Revelation. This book applies verbal aspect theory to tense usage in Revelation and focuses on how the tenses, as communicating verbal aspect, function within sections of Revelation.

Psycholinguistics explores the anchoring of language in cognition. The Slavic languages are an attractive topic for psycholinguistic studies since their structural characteristics offer great starting points for the development of research on speech processing. The research of these languages with experimental methods is, however, still in its infancy. This book provides an insight into the current research within this field. On one hand, central topic is the question of how Slavic languages can contribute to psycholinguistic findings. On the other hand, all chapters introduce their respective psycholinguistic method and discuss it according to its usefulness and transferability to the Slavic languages. The researched languages are mainly Russian and Czech, however, other languages (e.g., Polish, Belarusian or Bulgarian) are touched upon as well. Main topics are the characteristics of the mental lexicon, multilingualism, word recognition, and sentence comprehension. Furthermore, several contributions address the issue of verbal aspect and aktionsarten as well as other grammatical categories.
