Book Description
Study using Statistics Canada input-output models to estimate the economic activity generated by processing of the forest into consumer goods. The 1979 interprovincial model was used to estimate the impact of forestry activity in each of the provinces, while the 1980 national model was used to estimate the impact on Canada as a whole. The models helped estimate the impact of forestry activity on some 200 different sectors of the economy in output levels (dollars), jobs, and gross domestic product (in dollars). As well, the impact of forest produce exports is presented. A brief methodology is included.

Book Description
The objectives of this note are to examine the domestic and global context within which the Canadian forest industry operates and to identify those factors that have the greatest impact on economic activity in that industry. The review of the domestic context includes examination of the contribution that the forest industry makes to the national economy and the regional production structure of the industry (forest resources, input/output mixes). Discussion of the global context considers historical, current, future, and geographical trade patterns. Five major factors impacting the industry are discussed: trade barriers, both tariff and non-tariff; trade agreements; exchange rate fluctuations, especially with regard to the US dollar; the availability of substitute fibre sources; and stricter environmental regulations.

Book Description
Ken Drushka analyses the changes in human attitudes towards the forests, detailing the rise of the late nineteenth-century conservation movement and its subsequent decline after World War I, the interplay between industry and government in the development of policy, the adoption of sustained yield policies after World War II, and the recent adoption of sustainable forest management in response to environmental concerns. Drushka argues that, despite the centuries of use, the Canadian forest retains a good deal of its vitality and integrity. Written in accessible language and aimed at a general readership, Canada's Forests will be a must-read for anyone interested in the debate about the current and future uses of this precious natural resource.
