The purpose of this study was to determine the effect a student advisory program has on the school climate in a suburban high school. This study aimed to answer three research questions. The central research question was: What is the effect of a high school student advisory program on the school climate, students' sense of belonging and connectedness in the school community? The sub-questions related to the central research question are: How does feeling more connected to the school and building relationships influence students' perception of the school climate? How does a student advisory program at a suburban high school enhance the students' sense of belonging? How does networking with other students about the school environment affect the overall school climate? The researcher believes student advisory programs can positively influence a school's climate thus leading to students feeling more connected to their school with an increased sense of belonging. The conceptual framework reviews three themes: student advisory programs, connectedness and building relationships, and school climate.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a student advisory program affected school climate from teacher and student perspectives and school connectedness from student perspectives. The researcher gathered data using the following methods: distributing a student perception survey, a student climate survey, and a teacher climate survey; conducting student and teacher focus groups; and interviewing students and teachers. The interviews of teachers and the teacher focus groups indicated that the teachers thought the advisory program did help the school climate, and the teacher climate survey showed positive results. The results of the student survey indicated that the implementation of the advisory program increased school climate. The students stated they thought the advisory program had made a positive impact on connectedness within the school.

Inner city high schools today are struggling to create and maintain connections between students' values and schools requirements. Schools attempt to develop ways to help students become a vital part of the school community and provide them with resources to be successful both socially and academically. This study examined how an urban high school in the southwest implemented an academic advisory program to build and maintain the student/school relationship along with hoping to provide the resources to help increase student achievement in core academic programs. Research has identified the importance relationships have on academic achievement and the strong bonds that need to be developed with students and those there to support them. Previous attempts to provide students with the academic support through traditional tutoring in after-school programs have not proven to be successful in providing support students need. These after school tutoring programs have multiple challenges including being voluntary and students having other commitments they are involved with. Incorporating academic advisory programs during the school day is an attempt to overcome these challenges that are experienced with other programs. Using math and English course letter grade distribution comparisons were made to determine if changes in academic achievement occurred after implementation of academic advisory, whether participation in the program for more than one year made a difference on student academic achievement, and finally, if academic advisory had any different effect on students that are high, middle, or low achieving. This study could not identify any specific correlation between the academic advisory program and academic achievement. When looking at letter grade distribution data from before implementation and after implementation, similar growths and declines are seen with no identifiable trends during the program implementation. Consideration needs to be taken for the limitations identified and the school may want to conduct further review by addressing the limitations.

The book describes two similar and successful models of youth mentoring used by two acclaimed urban high schools that have consistently achieved exceptional graduation rates. Providing a detailed description of their methods – based upon extensive observation, and interviews with teachers, students, administrators, and parents – this book makes a major contribution to the debate on how to reduce the achievement gap.Using similar teacher-as-youth mentor and youth advising models, these two inner city schools – Fenway High School in Boston, Massachusetts; and the Kedma School in Jerusalem – have broken the cycle of failure for the student populations they serve—children from underrepresented groups living in poverty in troubled neighborhoods with few resources. Students in both schools have excelled academically, rarely dropout, and progress to college in significant numbers (Fenway has 90% graduation rate, with 95% of graduates going on to college. Kedma outperforms comparable urban schools by a factor of four). Both schools have won numerous awards, with Fenway High School gaining Pilot School status in Massachusetts, a recognition the state only awards to a few exemplary schools; and Kedma School being declared one of the 50 most influential educational endeavors in Israel.The success of both schools is directly attributable to their highly developed teacher-as-a-youth mentor programs that embody an ideology and mission that put students at the center of their programs and structures. The models are closely integrated with the curriculum, and support the social, emotional, cultural, and academic needs of students, as well as develop close mentor-student-parent relationships. The model furthermore includes extensive support for the mentors themselves. Apart from the potential of these models to narrow the achievement gap, these two schools have a record of creating a school climate that promotes safety, and reduces the incidence of bullying and violence. At the heart of both programs is creating community—between departments and functions in the school; and between teachers, staff, students, and parents. Everyone in the school system should read this book.Research suggests that caring relationships between students and teachers significantly enhance Social Emotional Learning (SEL) -- defined as the process through which children develop their ability to integrate thinking, feeling, and behaving to achieve important life tasks -- which is recognized as an important factor in children's success in school. However, caring schools are usually the exception, especially at the secondary level where relationships between students and teachers seem to deteriorate significantly.
