Excerpt from The Diseases and Pests of the Rubber Tree In 1911 the diseases which were known to attack the rubber tree were described in The Physiology and Diseases of Hevea brasiliensis. The number of recorded diseases was then comparatively small, and it was possible to include with them a general account of the structure and physiology of the tree, and a summary of those tapping experiments which promised to afford a foundation for a theory of rubber tapping. That book has now been out of print for some time, and several inquirers have suggested the issue of a second edition. But the number of known diseases of Hevea has, unfortunately, been considerably extended during the last eight years, while the work of numerous investigators in this field has added largely to our knowledge of both old and new ones. Consequently, rubber diseases now demand a volume to themselves; and it has therefore been decided to divide the subject-matter of the former book, and to publish a separate account, revised and brought up to date, of the diseases and pests only. It is hoped that it will be possible, at some future date, to deal similarly with the other half of the original volume. As the book is intended primarily for the rubber planter, technical botanical details have been avoided as much as possible. It is not practicable to exclude them altogether, nor, indeed, is that necessary, for rubber cultivation has made the planter familiar with technical botanical terms to a degree hitherto unknown in tropical agriculture. Excerpt from Insect Pests and Diseases of the Pecan But it is often a waste of time and money to apply insect and disease control measures to poor varieties or to trees that lack vigor because of inadequate soil fertility, overcrowding, or general neglect. To produce profitable crops, the pecan grower must adhere to cultural practices that pro mote tree vigor, stimulate fruiting, and minimize the damage caused by pests. For example, trees weakened by inadequate nitrogen fertilization and rank weed growth are more susceptible to damage by some leaf-spotting fungi. Conversely, too much nitrogen, which promotes season-long growth, can produce tender shoots that are highly susceptible to the scab fungus. Many disease organisms thrive under conditions that favor summer growth flushes. Practices that allow good air circulation such as wide spacing of trees, removal of lower limbs, and maintenance of low ground cover and hedgerows in summer facilitate disease and insect control. Ground sanitation is partially effective against most fungus diseases because the overwintering stage can often be eliminated. Ground trash such as broken limbs, shucks, and insect-infested nuts should be removed from the grove during the winter. Disking to turn under trash is not ad visable unless no other means of debris disposal is available. (disking can spread crown gall, and the resulting root pruning can lead to nutrient deficiencies, especially rosette.) This publication is not concerned with specific chemical control; the grower should refer to Stateextension service bulletins, which are updated often, or contact local extension service agents. Rather, our objective is to describe the biology of the insects and diseases and their symptoms in the grove and to outline general control measures. Excerpt from A Report on Plant Diseases of the State Black Rot. This is another destructive disease, causing the fruit to rot and cankers on the branches. The young growth is some times killed, the twigs then resembling those attacked by the twig blight, for which it may be mistaken. The disease was found on apple leaves at Wellsburg. The black rot is similar to the bitter rot in general appearance, except that instead of the masses of pinkish spores that break through the Skin in the case of bitter rot, there are small black bodies imbedded under the skin in the case of'black rot. The shrunken and Shriveled apples often remain on the trees for a year or more. This disease has been Very destructive to quinces in several parts of the State. At a number of places where it was found on quinces, it was also found on apples near by. The same treatment is recommended as for bitter rot. It is possible that the black rot' might be controlled to some extent when it is found on quinces by picking the rotting fruit before the Spores have developed and become distributed. On apples this might not be feasible on account of the size of the trees. Canker. The cankers are the dead and shrunken areas occasionally found on the branches and trunk. They are due to a number of causes. (see under Bitter Rot and Black Rot.) One of the common ones found in old orchards is known as the Illinois Canker. It may be recognized by the black round bodies that push through the dead bark on the branches and trunk. These bodies are sometimes nearly one-fourth of an inch in diameter, and attached to the wood, so that when they are broken off, a black ring remains. Keeping the cankers and dead branches cut out should prove effective. Crown Gall. This has been reported as occurring on nursery stock shipped into the State. Several specimens of the disease have been received at the Experiment Station. It would be well to burn all infected stock, such as apple, pear, peach, cherry, raspberry and blackberry, that have hard, irregular, rough swellings on the crowns or roots, in order to prevent the introduction of the disease. The swellings or galls are sometimes covered with a large number of roots. A similar disease is produced by an insect called the woolly aphis.
