Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of England Before the Reformation It is with pleasure that, in response to a kind wish of the Author's, I commend the present work to the careful and candid attention of my brother Churchmen. A pressure of duties exceptionally heavy has made it impossible for me to go through the volume with the detailed care which I could wish to bring to it. But I know enough already of Mr. Hague's literary work to be assured of his scrupulous desire to be accurate in matters of fact, and just in matters of inference. And I have made proof enough of this book to feel confident that he has done his utmost to carry out that desire in its pages, and with very valuable results. As regards the main position of the book, its thesis so to speak, my own convictions have long taken the general line which it lays down. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Church of England: Pre-Reformation Period It is to be presumed that a reason may be assigned for every book which is written. It may not always be evident to the reader, but the author must be conscious of some cause which moved him to write. In the present instance the moving cause was the lack of any work which seemed to the writer to trace the long story of the Church of England with sufficient brevity and sufficient fulness. Dry epitomes there are in abundance. Scholarly researches into the most remote past come forth year by year. The history of portions of the long centuries, or personal narrative, has been often written with appreciative genius. But there seemed more than room for a connected narrative which might be useful to one who is commencing acquaintance with English Church history, and which might also possess sufficient interest for the general reader. The Church of England is at once old and new. It has been reformed, but its heritage has come down to it through more than a millennium. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 4 Who would suppose, for instance, that while Burnet was yet alive, he had been admonished of an error into which he had fallen, in speaking of the Council of Trullo, (or in T ratio as it should rather be) as a council holden in the fifth century, whereas it took place, in reality, not till the very end of the seventh, or beginning of the eighth century? Still however the original mistake has been repeated again and again in the text, in various editions, and the correction reserved for the addenda or appendix at the very end of the work. In the present edition the text will be found to be corrected as it should be, and the correction sent to the author, omitted. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 7 The publication of the History of the Reformation seems to have been first suggested to its author by the appearance of the new French translation of Sanders' book de origine ac progressu Schismatis Anglicani. This work had been printed at Cologne in 1585, and had passed through several editions, and been translated into French in 1587. Upon the publication of the new translation by Maucroix at Paris in 1676, the author was diverted from the proposal made to him by Sir William Jones to undertake the history of England, and induced to write this History in answer to Sanders' work, which, he says, was at that time much cried up in France. At the time when he commenced his work he had, as he remarks in his Reflections on Atterbury, p. 25, had no sort of practice in our records, but took no small pains and charge for three years together in searching for materials, and submitted himself to the direction and advice of Bishop Stillingfleet, Sir John Marsham, and Mr. Petyt. He was at first unable to procure admittance into Sir John Cotton's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
