The palaces lie close to several public parks, large open spaces planted with trees, grass, and flowers, into which anyone can freely pass, no matter how poor he may be. These London parks are of the greatest value to the health of the inhabitants. Within the last few years, others have been laid out and planted in various quarters of the suburbs, but it would be almost impossible, in the present state of London, to have any new spaces for such a purpose opened out in the midst of crowded dwellings, so that the new parks are seldom so well situated as the old ones. 3. Westminster is adorned by two celebrated buildings. One of these, called the Palace of Westminster, or more commonly the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting-place of the Lords and Commons, where our laws are made by the nobility and representatives of the people. It is a magnificent pile, in the Gothic style, built fifty years ago on the bank of the Thames. Its lofty towers can be seen, and the striking of its great clock heard, at a considerable distance. Close by it rises the less imposing but far more ancient edifice of Westminster Abbey. This is a famous and beautiful church, which contains the remains of many of the Sovereigns of England, and also those of many other distinguished Englishmen. No higher honour could be paid to the memory of a great author, soldier, or statesman, than to inter his lifeless body within the walls of the Abbey. The Sovereigns of England are crowned here. Beneath the antiquated throne of plain wood, used on the occasion of a coronation, lies a large block of stone. This is the ancient coronation stone of Scotland, used in the crowning of the Scottish kings for ages before the crowns of England and Scotland were united....
