Book Description
Excerpt from The Burton Holmes Lectures, Vol. 6 of 10: With Illustrations From Photographs Accordingly a number of exploring-parties were sent out to confirm or to disprove the extravagant statements that had long been rife. When the leaders of these expeditions, on their return to civilization, submitted their reports, these were at first received incredulously; the world would not believe that wonders such as they described existed elsewhere than in the imagination of the daring travelers. But as the witnesses increased in number doubt gave place to belief, and the world awoke to the importance of their reve lations. It was soon proved that a new Wonderland had been discovered; and Congress, acting with commendable promptitude, decreed that this territory where Nature had assembled so many of her marvelous creations, this land she had so long shrouded in mvstery, should be set apart as a perpetual playground for the Nation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Burton Holmes Lectures, Vol. 1 of 10 In the foreword to the First Edition of the Travelogues I took occasion to express my gratitude to the lecture-going public who. By their generous support given to the platform presentations of the Travelogues, made possible for me the journeys described in these ten volumes. I have now a new public to thank - the reading public - and to my readers I wish now to express my sincere gratitude for the favor with which they have received the Travelogues as they appear between the covers of these books. It is difficult for one who, for nearly twenty vears, has been traveling as a deputy Sightseer for so many auditors and readers, not to feel that throughout all these long, busy, interesting years, he has had the best of the bargain. But I am encouraged to believe that the return I bring is fair and just exchange for the wander-privilege that I enjoy, and to believe as well, that not a little of the pleasure that I find in travel is shared by those for whom and by whose favor I travel and thereby possess the world. I ask nothing better than to be permitted to continue the work which. Begun as a labor of love, has now become both a vocation and an avocation. I wish again to acknowledge the debt of gratitude I owe to my fellow workers, whose efforts have contributed in so large a measure to the success of the Travelogues: To Katherine Gordon Breed, who was the first to realize the possibilities of the art of coloring lantern slides; to Helen E. Stevenson, to whose exquisite skill and artistic discrimination are due the color - beauty and the convincing truthfulness of the illustra tions of all the later Travelogues; to Oscar Bennett Depue, who, since our first lecture, in 1890, has operated the projecting instruments with unfailing accuracy and skill - who since the introduction of Motion Pictures, in 1897, has devoted himself to the perfecting of the art of Cinematography, and who has been for many years and in many lands the ever helpful companion of my travels. And to Louis Francis Brown. Who. With business ability and tact, has directed the public presentations of the Travelogues. E. Burton holmes. Book Description
Excerpt from The Burton Holmes Lectures, Vol. 8 of 10 The dawn of the twentieth century finds Russia the most conspicuous figure among contemporary nations. The world, amazed by the achievements of Russian diplomacy, is asking what the Muscovite will next attempt and do; for what the Muscovite attempts he does. Russia invariably replies. with courteous and modest words, that she is planning no surprise, and has in view no ends save the welfare of her people and the preservation of universal peace. Book Description
Excerpt from The Burton Holmes Lectures, Vol. 3 of 10: With Illustrations From Photographs by the Author T IS a mistaken belief that he who knows not ancient Greece, as revealed in the immortal works of poetry, philosophy, and art, he who has not spent his life in the companionship of the Greek classics, he who cannot in his own soul realize the Greece of old, is not fitted to approach her shores. The Olympian Games were the excuse for my intrusion into the land of the scholar and the archaeologist. I knew too well that I would bring to Greece only a love of travel, an eye not wholly blind to beauty, and a deep respect for the history, the letters, and the art of Greece.
