Book Description
This book rediscovers an important contribution to a popular field of graphic design and suggests that Ismar David's calligraphic book jackets present a viable alternative to the current design approach. Ismar David belonged to a group of accomplished calligraphers who established themselves as jacket designers in New York in the 1950s. David's jacket designs are distinguished from other work of the period as powerful and expressive. His style is informed by a thorough mastery of the typographic tradition yet looks remarkably fresh, even today. He combines calligrapher's craft with fine artist's sensibility "to communicate his ideas and his feelings in the service of the book." The book examines the historical context of Ismar David's work including a concise overview of the history of book jacket design in Germany and in the U.S. and describes David's freelance career in publishing. Thirty of his noteworthy jackets are highlighted and discussed. The author argues that the current preference for concept-driven jacket design may eventually give way to another style more closely based on formal craftsmanship that would benefit from Ismar David's legacy.

Book Description
Impressionist master Claude Monet began over forty versions of Waterloo Bridge during his three London sojourns between 1899 and 1901. He viewed his paintings of the landmark bridge both individually and as an ensemble, collectively expressing his sense of the essential subject - the atmosphere and colors of the fog-bound landscape of London's Thames River. Monet struggled to complete these paintings after his return to France, where he re-worked many of the canvases in his Giverny studio, releasing them for sale over the course of several years. The exhibition Monet's Waterloo Bridge: Vision and Process brings together eight paintings from the famous London series. Scholarly essays and an in-depth technical study of the Memorial Art Gallery's Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun (1903) explore Monet's artistic vision as well as the process by which he struggled to achieve that vision. NANCY NORWOOD is Curator of European Art, Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York.

Book Description
Dream Tonight of Peacock Tails marks the first in-depth examination of Pynchon’s debut novel, which was immediately recognized as a breakthrough masterpiece. The eight essays collected in the volume provide both scholars and avid readers with new and original insights into a too-often underestimated work that, probably even more than Gravity’s Rainbow, established Pynchon as one of the great masters of twentieth-century American literature. This book deliberately privileges a multidisciplinary and transnational approach, encompassing collaborations from a particularly international and diverse academic context. As such, this volume offers a multifaceted pattern of expanding investigation that tackles the novel’s apparently chaotic but meticulously organized structure by rereading it in the light of recent US and European history and economics, as well as by exploring its many real and imagined locations. Not only are the essays brought together here revelatory of Pynchon’s way of working, but they also tell us something about our own ways of approaching his fiction.

Book Description
Ethnodevelopment is a well-established concept in the field of development studies. Despite its relevance to tourism initiatives and processes in the Global South, it continues to be an underutilised concept in the field. This book bridges this gap, presenting an original conceptual framework to study the relationship between tourism and ethnodevelopment. It focuses on the processes of inclusion, empowerment, self-expression and self-determination to explore the effects of tourism initiatives on the identities, cultural resilience, livelihoods and economic opportunities of ethnic minority communities. Chapters explore a range of concepts and issues such as gender, authenticity, indigenous knowledge, tradition, the commodification of culture, community-based tourism, local entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, and tourism and the environment. Drawing on rich primary research conducted across South East Asia and South and Central America the book offers detailed evaluations of the successes and failures of various tourism policies and practices. This book makes a valuable contribution for students, scholars, practitioners and policy-makers alike interested in tourism, development studies, geography and anthropology.
