Battleship Roma was one of the three Italian Littorio class battleships operating during the Second World War. She was one of the most modern and powerful battleships of her times. The construction of Roma and her sister Impero, the fourth battleship never finished, was planned to strengthen the Italian Navy which, until then, had only two modern battleships and some old WWI battleships. Battleship Roma was laid down by the Italian shipbuilder Cantieri Riuniti dell Adriatico, in Trieste, on 18 September 1938, almost four year after the first two battleships (Vittorio Veneto and Littorio) of her class. She was launched on 9 June 1940, the day before Italy entered the war, and was commissioned into Regia Marina (the Italian Navy) on 14 June 1942. Based on experience of the first two ships, some small improvements were made to her, including additional freeboard to the bow."

Although not as well-known as the V-1 buzz bomb and the V-2 missile, the first German missiles to see combat were anti-ship missiles, the Henschel Hs.293 guided missile and the Fritz-X guided bomb. These began to see extensive combat in the Mediterranean in 1943. In their most famous use, the Italian battleship Roma was sunk by a Fritz-X attack in September 1943 when Italy attempted to switch sides. In July 1943 Benito Mussolini, Italy's warlord and the father of fascism fell from power in a hastily arranged plot, the details of which even today remain controversial. A cabal of generals took the nation's reins and bungled their way toward an accommodation with the Allies. When General Eisenhower announced an armistice with Italy on the evening of 8 September he believed he had struck a deal that included Italian military cooperation against the Germans. In fact, the generals had promised more than they could deliver and Germany's terrible, swift reprisal shattered Italy's confused air force and army. The armistice likewise caught the navy by surprise, with its battleships raising steam to attack the Allied fleet landing at Salerno. Nonetheless, the Regia Marina obeyed its government's orders and honored the pact the generals had negotiated.
