Book Description
Excerpt from The Application of Ornament The former text-books of this series con cerned themselves with the rudimentary lines on which ornament may be designed and distributed. It is only in theory, however, that orna ment can be independently discussed. Frac tically it exists only relatively to its applica tion. Apart from its place and purpose and the process of its doing, there is no such thing as ornament. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Ornamental Design: Embracing the Anatomy of Pattern, the Planning of Ornament, the Application of Ornament There was a time in my own struggling for artistic existence, when I should have been so grateful for any practical teaching in orna ment, that I fancy there must be students who will find it helpful to have set plainly before them what I have had to puzzle out for myself. Hence this series of d104 Books of Ornamental Design; in which I have amplified and illustrated the substance of a series of Cantor Lectures delivered in December last before the Society of Arts. Book Description
Excerpt from Ornament and Its Application: A Book for Students Treating in a Practical Way of the Relation of Design to Material, Tools and Methods of Work What I have endeavoured to do is, to show the clear and close relation of design to workmanship; to arouse interest in a side Of art which, regarding it in the rather forbidding light Of technique, lovers of art are accustomed to dismiss from their minds as no concern of theirs; and so to Open their eyes to what is indeed a never-failing source of interest in art. Book Description
Excerpt from The Grammar of Ornament In the following chapters I have endeavoured to establish these main facts, First. That whenever any style of ornament commands universal admira tion, it will always be found to be in accordance with the laws which regulate the distribution of form in nature. Secondly. That however varied the manifestations in accordance with these laws, the leading ideas on which they are based are very few. Thirdly. That the modifications and developments which have taken place from one style to another have been caused by a sudden throwing off of some fixed trammel, which set thought free for a time, till the new idea, like the old, became again fixed, to give birth in its turn to fresh inventions. Lastly. I have endeavoured to show, in the twentieth chapter, that the future progress of Ornamental Art may be best secured by engrafting on the experience of the past the knowledge we may obtain by a return to Nature for fresh inspiration. To attempt to build up theories of art, or to form a style, independently of the past, would be an act of supreme folly. It would be at once to reject the experiences and accumulated knowledge of thousands of years. On the contrary, we should regard as our inheritance all the successful labours of the past, not blindly following them, but' employing them simply as guides to find the true path. Book Description
Excerpt from The Evolution of Architectural Ornament If this book contains, of deliberation, any novel features, these consist mainly in its general arrangement, classifying architectural ornament as to its bases, found either in vegetable or animal forms of life, or in straight or curved lines and in the tracing of Gothic forms almost wholly to nature, those of the thirteenth century representing spring, followed in regular succession by those of summer, autumn and winter, alike in England and on the Continent. The appendix chapter on some capitals which the author sketched in Alexandria in 1911 is also, it is believed, quite new, except that a paper on the subject has been read before the Society of Architects. Book Description
Excerpt from The Planning of Ornament It was not possible in this case to make the plates speak quite so plainly for them selves as in the former handbook but I have made a point of referring to them specifically at every turn, at the risk even of tiresome iteration. They are arranged strictly in the order in which mention is made of them, and placed as near as possible to the allusion to them in the text. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Ornament, Ancient and Medieval The predominance of illustrations from architecture is due not merely to the fact that these chapters are based on lectures to architects; but also to the fact that the styles are most clearly exhibited in the progress of architecture as the mistress art. It is hoped that the Books Recommended will enable the reader to supply for himself the illustrations from the other arts which he finds lacking in this work.
