Book Description
This book provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the Antiphospholipid syndrome. One of the most important advances in rheumatology and connective tissue diseases of the last decade. It provides an explanation for many previously undefined conditions with no clear pathogenesis encompassing all subspeculations in internal medicine as well as obstetrics. Clotting problems leading to strokes and myocardial infarctions (in younger people) as well as a large variety of other syndromes such as chorea, hyproadrenalism, pulmonary problems are now being understood.

Book Description
Written by the foremost researchers in the field, this book gathers together in a single source the many important clinical associations of antiphospholipid antibodies. Antibody-related clotting mechanisms and their relationship to conditions such as recurrent strokes, chorea, multi infarct dementias, a variety of spinal syndromes, Addison's Disease, recurrent miscarriages, and many more are discussed in depth. The importance of these antibodies in 'Primary,' 'Secondary,' and 'Catastrophic' Antiphospholipid Syndrome is highlighted. Each chapter is devoted to a specific internal system and the clinical effects this syndrome has on that system. This authoritative book is an essential addition to medical libraries as well as an invaluable reference for general physicians, internists, rheumatologists, neurologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, dermatologists, and obstetricians.

Book Description
In 1983 Graham Hughes described a syndrome in which the blood has a tendency to clot. Hughes syndrome is at the root of diverse conditions such as stroke, leg vein thrombosis and recurrent abortion. Hughes Syndrome addresses the complete range of features produced by this common disorder, which is also known as antiphospholipid syndrome. The condition can affect any organ, and is treated using commonly available drugs including low-dose aspirin and warfarin. This timely book fulfils the need for a cross-disciplinary clinical textbook and contains contributions from the leading international authorities. Hughes Syndrome should be read by anyone who might have a clinical or scientific interest in this condition: rheumatologists, haematologists, obstetricians and neurologists.

Book Description
The International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies is held every three years to discuss the recent advances and future directions in Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS). This volume collects the scientific highlights and new findings about APS that were generated from the most recent 13th Congress, held in Galveston, Texas in 2010. Chapters were written by an internationally-distinguished group of scientists from the point-of-view of multiple specialty areas. Each chapter was written in a uniform and systematic basis to present the latest evidence-based research, including the basic science of APS, task force reports from the Congress on controversial aspects of APS, and future directions of APS research. This book will appeal to all clinicians involved in the treatment and management of APS patients, to residents in a variety of medical subspecialties, and to research scientists interested in a better understanding of this complex and evolving disease.

Book Description
This book, part of the series Rare Diseases of the Immune System, offers comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of the pathophysiology and management of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Immunologic and genetic aspects are discussed and the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for such phenomena as APS-mediated thrombosis and pregnancy loss/complications are explained. The main clinical manifestations, classification criteria and diagnostic tools are identified, and close attention is paid to the nature of the involvement of various organs or organ systems in APS. Specific chapters describe the treatment of the different symptoms, therapies of value in avoiding recurrences, and innovative treatment approaches. The authors are senior experts in the field who are aided by younger fellows, ensuring that the book is also educationally oriented. This handy volume will be a valuable tool for postgraduates in training and professionals wishing to extend their knowledge of this specific syndrome.

Book Description
This book contains information on an increasingly common autoimmune disorder. Also called "sticky blood" and Hughes Syndrome, APS makes one's blood clot too easily, creating high risk of stroke, thrombosis, and premature heart attack. It is also implicated in many other health problems including repeated miscarriages, neurological problems, eary dementia and migraines. It is often associated with lupus, and mimics the symptoms of other diseases, including MS. Symptoms include; migraines and headaches, recurrent miscarriage, memory loss, slurred speech, blood clots, poor circulation, muscle pain and cramps, blurred vision, extreme fatigue, epilepsy, strokes, thrombosis and a form of angina. Because of lack of knowledge of APS in the medical establishment, sufferers are often misdiagnosed with MS or other more life-threatening conditions. This book helps the reader identify the symptoms and provides important information on diagnosis and treatment of APS. It contains many moving stories, explaining how people eventually got a diagnosis, their symptoms, the impact of APS on their lives and whether or not treatment has worked. Written in collaboration with Dr. Graham Hughes, the major researcher of APS in the UK, this book provides a clearly written informative look at an important but little-known disease.

Book Description
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an acquired autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly produces antiphospholipid antibodies that attack tissues in the body. These antibodies can lead to the formation of blood clots in arteries and veins. During pregnancy, APS can also lead to miscarriage and stillbirth. Classification criteria require a clinical event (i.e., thrombosis or pregnancy complication) and persistent positive blood test results at least three months apart that detect lupus anticoagulant, anti-cardiolipin antibodies, or anti-β2-glycoprotein-1 antibodies. This book addresses important clinical aspects of APS, including stroke and APS, obstetric manifestations of APS, and bleeding complications in APS. It also discusses the diagnostic utility of a novel autoantibody against β2-glycoprotein I/HLA class II complexes as a promising biomarker for APS. Finally, this book also reviews the latest findings in the field of extracellular vesicles in APS and provides explanations of their role in the pathogenesis of APS.
