Preliminary data are presented on [pi]-production in inclusive pp interactions at 200 GeV/c using the NAL 30-inch bubble chamber and downstream wide-gap spark chambers. Correlations between [pi]−'s are studied. No strong short-range correlation effect is seen in contrast to ISR results. Further details of the physical characteristics of the hybrid system and track reconstruction are described in accompanying papers. In this paper they present preliminary results on correlations between [pi]−'s in 200 GeV/c pp interactions obtained from the NAL 30-inch bubble chamber-wide gap spark chamber hybrid system. The physical characteristics of the hybrid system and track reconstruction are described in accompanying papers. The data came from a film sample of 5,000 pictures. By selecting frames with no upstream bubble chamber wall interactions and with the number of beam tracks less than 15, they have obtained 596 events (1604 negative tracks) from all topologies in the first measurement pass. By detecting high momentum secondaries in the spark chambers, they have obtained a complete momentum spectra in the entire range of kinematic variables.

We propose a bubble chamber study of the general features of proton-proton interactions in the 200 to 500 GeV energy range in as much detail as measuring accuracy permits, starting with charged particle multiplicities, transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions, and detailed measurement of particle systems originating from the target proton, and extending to an exploration of the possibility of doing some four-constraint or equivalent kinematic analysis of complete events. A scanning search for any new or exotic phenomena is an important part of this proposal. We request 100,000 pictures initially in a 2 meter or 14 foot hydrogen bubble chamber, with 200 GeV or greater proton beam, [delta]p/p≤ .1%, [delta][theta] ≤ 2 mrad, and both tolerances better, if possible.

The reactions pp $Yields$ pp $pi$$sup +$pi$sup -$ and pp $Yields$ pp$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$ at 200 and 300 GeV/c were investigated using the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber and downstream wide-gap spark chambers. This analysis is based upon approximately 9500 4- pronged and 6-pronged events. The cross sections were consistent with pomeron dominance for these reactions. The final state pp $pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$ is dominated by single diffractive dissociation, whose features are quite similar to those observed at low energy. A strong signal for double excitation was seen in the pp $pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$ final state and pomeron factorization was found to be satisfied. In the pp $pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$ final state, 66 events passed the criterion of double pomeron exchange defined by D.M. Chew. However, these events were found to be severely contaminated by diffractive events. The two-particle exclusive azimuthal correlations agreed well with the prediction of a photostatistical model. Results are presented on the topological cross sections obtained for antiproton-proton interactions from an exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch bubble chamber to a 100 GeV/ c negative beam enriched in p 's. The p p inelastic cross section is found to be [sigma] inel = 34.6 ± 0.4 mb, and the average inelastic charged particle multiplicity to be $\langle$n$\rangle$ = 6.74 ± 0.05.
