Glossaries are one of the most important sources for our knowledge of early medieval schools, for they provide an accurate records of what texts were studied and how they were understood. But they are also very difficult to access: countless glossaries lie unpublished in manuscript, the relations between them are unknown, and their origins are obscure. The most important contribution to solving these problems was made by Wallace Martin Lindsay (1858-1937), one of the greatest classical scholars ever produced in the British Isles, who in a pioneering series of articles identified the principal glossaries and clarified their relationships; he subsequently oversaw their publication in Glossaria Latina. So comprehensive was Lindsay's work that the subject virtually stood still for half a century; but recent advances in paleography and Insular Latin studies have drawn scholarly attention to glossaries once again. Any future work on glossaries must be based on Lindsay's pioneering articles; to facilitate such work, these articles have been provided with comprehensive indices of the Latin lemmata and sources of the glossaries, together with an account of recent work on medieval glossaries.

This anthology of texts is meant as an elementary introduction to Medieval Latin. The book contains a sample of texts with introductory material, glossaries and commentaries that intend to give help with grammatical difficulties. There are also translations to every text. Studied together with an introduction in Latin morphology and syntax the book will serve the needs of students of Medieval history, culture, church history and theology for a basic collection of texts to start with. The book is already part of the program for the Master studies in Church History at the Norwegian Lutheran School of Theology and is also meant to meet the need for an elementary text anthology within the Bachelor and Master programmes of interdisciplinary Medieval studies at the University of Oslo. Each text with its glossary and translation is meant to offer students a first acquaintance with the language, while the range of the vocabulary should cover the most frequently occurring terms within the ecclesiastical culture of the middle Ages. In other words, the intention has been both to present texts suitable for elementary exercises in the Latin language and at the same time to offer a handful of cultural artefacts useful for the study of ecclesiastical culture. The introductory paragraphs are meant to place each text in its respective cultural and historical context and bibliographical references offer first aid to relevant literature within the diverse fields.
