Excerpt from Stanford University and Thereabouts Leland Stanford was born at Watervliet, near Albany, New York, March 9, 1824. His father was a public-spirited farmer, who added to his regular occupation road and bridge building, and finally railroad grading in the infant days of railroad building in the State. Young Leland grew up on the farm, with the usual succession of farm duties and district schooling, and at twenty-two went to Albany to study law. His law studies completed, he turned to the West for a start in his profession and settled at Port Washington, a frontier town of Wisconsin. After four years of steady work, nearly all his worldly possessions, including his law library, were destroyed by fire. This was in 1852. The California fever was then at its height, and unexpectedly adrift, he gravitated naturally to the Golden State, where three brothers had already preceded him. With them he entered into extensive mercantile operations in Sacramento and the adjacent mining country, and in the course of the next eight years amassed the comfortable fortune of a quarter of a million dollars. In 1860, he was chosen a delegate to the convention that nominated Lincoln, afterward witnessed the inauguration, and remained in Washington some weeks, holding frequent consultations with the President regarding Pacific Coast affairs. From Washington he went to Albany for a long visit, and with the half-formed intention of settling down for life in the old home. But he soon discovered that his deepest interests were in California, and in midsummer he returned to find himself already nominated for Governor by the new Republican party. He was triumphantly elected, and in the trying days of the Civil War was able to render material aid to the cause of the Union. Before his term of office expired, he became deeply interested in the project of a transcontinental railway, and, declining a renomination, threw all his energies into the project of the Central Pacific Railroad. Physically the space in front of the building has become the heart of the campus. Its presence has turned a former thoroughfare into a busy enclosed space that eventually will be parked and take the same relationship to student life as the inner quadrangle. The influence of new university buildings on the streams of student traffic is most interesting and has to be taken full account of in planning both buildings and grounds. The erection of the library has hastened the inevitable rearrangement of roads through the campus so as to provide easy access to the residence district, in spite of the three projected quadrangles that will form a long rectangle lying as a complete block across the direct course from Palo Alto. The erection of connect ing arcades between the three quadrangles will further emphasize the unity of the central group of university buildings. Here we are at Palo Alto, and within a few hundred yards of the entrance to the University grounds. You can see the arches of the great stone gateway and one of the towers with its red-tiled roof from the station. Now for a carriage, for - the Quadrangle is a good mile from the gate, and there is much ground to be gone over during the day. We will drive first to the Mausoleum, then go on to the Museum, and so work around to the Quadrangle. That is the Memorial Arch at the end of the avenue, with the top of the clock-tower above it. Most of the trees on the low hills beyond are live oaks, though there is quite a sprinkling of white oaks, too. Black Mountain, that dark blue shoulder to the left, is covered with chaparral, and those tall trees on the long ridge over there to the right are redwoods.
