This book examines the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games. It tells the story of the extensive infrastructural transformation of the city and its changing global image in relation to hosting of the Games. Reviewing different cultural representations of Sarajevo in the period from the 1960s to the 1980s, the book explores how the promotion of the city as a future global tourist centre resulted in an increased awareness among its populace of the city’s cultural particularities. The analysis reveals how the process of modernisation relating to hosting of the Olympics provided an opportunity to re-imagine the city as a particularly environmentally progressive city. Placed within the field of studies of late socialism, the book offers important insights into Yugoslav society during the period, including those relating to the country’s unique geopolitical position and its nationalities policies.

In the case of the 1984 Sarajevo Olympic Winter Games, the legacy evokes sentiments that range from hopefulness to dejection, playfulness to anxiety, since what was to follow only 8 years after this mega event was the most violent destruction of any city in modern European history. Using sentiment and data analysis the research analyses existing international academic discourse on the mentioned topics and questions their impact on the city identity. The results of the analysis show the almost identical ratio between Olympic Games and war identity, with slightly higher association with Olympic Games identity. Occurrence and bigram analysis confirm that and results in favor of the Olympic Games. Finally, sentiment analysis shows that 87.5% of articles are classified as war sentiment. The presented study concludes that the academic discourse obscures the identity of Sarajevo, maintaining the status quo and polarizing it between the opposing memory debate of the two analyzed happenings.

The research conducted for this report seeks to contribute to our growing knowledge of the Olympic Movement through a socio-historical study on how memory contributes to the Olympic Games legacy outcomes. To accomplish this, the memory of the 1984 Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo is analyzed and traced during the period of conflict and war in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1990s. Unlike other studies of this topic and time period, this research separates itself, and contributes new understandings of the Olympic Movement more broadly, by analyzing the subject from the perspective of transitional justice and post-conflict reconstruction (TJ). TJ is considered a set of mechanisms used by its advocates seeking to realize how societies and peoples 'move on' from periods of intense physical and emotional trauma and human rights abuses. The broad argument being made through this research is that sport can and has a significant role to play in this process. As such, the Olympic Games, more particularly, can serve as a catalyst for the achievement of certain transitional justice goals in post-conflict societies.
