Singapore's Foreign Policy: The Search For Regional Order
Author: Amitav Acharya
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814474738
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
The conventional understanding of Singapore's foreign policy can be summarized in three main propositions: first, it is dictated by the imperatives of being a small state; second, its primary purpose is to ensure Singapore's survival, given its small size; and third, this logic of survival dictates a realpolitik approach to foreign policy and national security. This book argues that an exclusively realist view of Singapore's foreign policy is inadequate. Singapore's foreign policy is also shaped by the positive effects of economic interdependence and regional institution-building — instruments that realists tend to dismiss, but which Singapore has self-consciously tried to promote as instruments of regional order. The book first looks at the evolution of Singapore's foreign policy, before analyzing Singapore's international relations and national security in the context of economic growth and terrorism. It concludes with an interesting chapter on the impact of the rise of China and India on the regional landscape.

Sovereign Wealth Funds
Author: Christopher Balding
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199942773
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 231
Book Description
Sovereign wealth funds are a growing and dynamic force in international finance. The shifting international economic relations from capital rich states gives them new power in influencing the global agenda. Despite controlling trillions of dollars in the biggest companies in the world, little is known about the opaque funds of oil rich and non-democratic governments. This is the first book to compile a history of sovereign wealth funds recounting the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority's involvement with the scandal-plagued BCCI bank and Chinese arms exports to Iran. By constructing a history within the proper context of oil driven surpluses and large inflationary pressures with no international investment framework, this book explains the development and growth of sovereign wealth funds. The economics of capital surplus countries and investment strategies are examined in order to better understand sovereign wealth fund creation and growth. In a straightforward and accessible style, the author examines the complex and amazing growth of an unknown group of investors controlling trillions of dollars worldwide.

Book Description
This Festschrift is an outgrowth of a collection of papers presented as a conference in honor of Professor Heinz K. Henisch on his sixty-fifth birthday held at the Institute for Amorphous Studies. Bloomfield Hills. Michigan. It is our great pleasure to be editors of the Festschrift volume to honor Heinz and his work. Professor Henisch has a long and distinguished career and has many accomplishments in semiconductor materials and devices. He has made seminal contributions to the understanding of semiconductor switching devices and contact properties. He has an outstandin~ reputation as an expositor of science. His seminars and lectures are always deep. lucid and witty. He received his doctorate in Physics from the University of Reading and then joined the faculty. In 1963. he accepted a position in the Department of Physics at Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State. Dr. Henisch broadened his research interest to include the History of Photography. At the present time. Dr. Henisch holds parallel appointments as a Professor of Physics and a Professor of the History of Photography at Pennsylvania State University. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. the Institute of Physics. London. the Royal Photographic society and is a Corresponding Member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Photographie. Multinational Federations
Author: Michael Burgess
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134120869
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
This is the first comparative volume available on multinational federations, bringing together an international range of experts on federalism. Multinational federations are federal states intended to provide a framework that can accommodate, manage and resolve some of the most intractable political conflicts of our time that emerge from identity politics: those that stem from competing national visions, whether within or between established states. Featuring key experts in the field such as Michael Burgess, Alain Gagnon and Ronald Watts, this unique book draws on a wide geographical range of country studies including Belgium, Canada, India, Malaysia, Spain, Russia, Cyprus, India, Switzerland and the EU in order to illustrate the pivotal relationship between federalism and nationalism. In so doing, it addresses the practical relevance of federalism to the new political recognition of difference and diversity in the specific form of national minoritarianism. Multinational Federations will be of strong interest to students and researchers of federalism, democracy and nationalism.

Beyond Quasicrystals
Author: Francoise Axel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662031302
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 624
Book Description
This book is the collection of most of the written versions of the Courses given at the Winter School "Beyond Quasicrystals" in Les Houches (March 7-18, 1994). The School gathered lecturers and participants from all over the world and was prepared in the spirit of a general effort to promote theoretical and experimental interdisciplinary communication between mathematicians, theoretical and experimental physicists on the topic of the nature of geometric order in solids beyond standard periodicity and quasi periodicity. The overall structure of the book reflects the wish of the editors to pose this fundamental question of geometric order in solids from both the experimental and theoretical point of view. The first part is devoted more specifically to quasicrystals. These materials were the common starting point of most of the audience and present a first concrete example of a non-trivial geometric order. We chose to focus on a few fundamental aspects of quasicrystals related to hidden symmetries in solids which are not easily found in standard textbooks on the topic, not to reach an exhaustive survey which is already available elsewhere.

Conformal Field Theory
Author: Serge? Vladimirovich Ketov
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9810216084
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 502
Book Description
Conformal field theory is an elegant and powerful theory in the field of high energy physics and statistics. In fact, it can be said to be one of the greatest achievements in the development of this field. Presented in two dimensions, this book is designed for students who already have a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, field theory and general relativity. The main idea used throughout the book is that conformal symmetry causes both classical and quantum integrability. Instead of concentrating on the numerous applications of the theory, the author puts forward a discussion of the general methods of conformal field theory as a physical theory. Hence the book provides in a self-contained way the necessary knowledge and ?conformal? intuition which underline the various applications of conformal field theory. It is aimed to assist students and professionals in the study of the theory from its first principles and in applying the methods in their own research. The first of its kind, this book promises to give a detailed and comprehensive insight into the workings of conformal field theory.
