Author: Andy Martrich
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469682532
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 197
Book Description
The Jargon Society, a boundary-pushing publisher of poetry and experimental writing, was founded by Jonathan Williams (1929–2008) in 1951. Jargon quickly gained a reputation as the home of the poetic and literary avant-garde, including noted midcentury poets like Charles Olson and Lorine Niedecker. Williams himself looms large in this story as the publisher at Jargon until his death, making this book as much about his life and work as the press he founded, which today operates through the Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville, North Carolina. Andy Martrich authors this story in a manner befitting Jargon's ethos of literary experimentation by focusing on the books the Society cataloged but never published. While it's not uncommon for a small press to plan for books that don't make it to publication, Martrich argues that Jargon's incessant financial difficulties, coupled with Williams's impressive network, makes its trail of unfinished projects unique and an ideal way to chronicle the press itself. Using archival research, interviews with volunteers at Jargon, and more, Martrich gives readers not only an intimate look into a Southern press and publisher but also an important history of modern and experimental literature in twentieth-century America. Shy of the Squirrel's Foot includes an epilogue by Anne Midgette, an afterword by Nicole Raziya Fong, and Jargon's complete annotated bibliography, which details every book the press published, compiled in one place for the first time.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: 2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious
Author: Shannon Hale
Publisher: Disney Electronic Content
ISBN: 1368024513
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
Doreen Green, age fourteen, is a little too busy wiping out crime in her suburban New Jersey neighborhood to focus on her overdue homework. That's because she also happens to be Squirrel Girl, a bushy-tailed, squirrel-powered Super Hero! After foiling the nefarious plot of an amateur Super Villain, Squirrel Girl is finally finding her groove--and group texting with the Avengers, like, all the time. Doreen, on the other hand, is still trying to navigate friendships, evil teachers, and all the pitfalls that come with middle school. (Seriously, it's complicated.) An announcement goes out that sends waves of excitement through the community: There's a new mall opening on the border of Shady Oaks and neighboring town Listless Pines, and they all get to vote on the mall's mascot! Everyone goes wild over the election . . . a little too wild, if you ask Squirrel Girl and her BHFF (Best Human Friend Forever), Ana Sofia. Soon the two towns are at war--even the trusty Squirrel Scouts are going berserk. Is there something sinister at work in Shady Oaks? Something that has less to do with quality shopping choices and more to do with world domination? And will Squirrel Girl be able to unleash the furry paws of justice in time to save the day?

God and the Squirrels
Author: T.K. Wade
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1329750241
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
Introducing the very first "bizarre fiction" by author T.K. Wade! Robert was a simple insurance salesman who's life did not really amount to much. He hated his job and spent his days wallowing in self-pity. One day, Robert tried to run a squirrel over with his car in anger, but to God, that was the last straw. The man had to be punished, and by punishment, he would be turned into a squirrel and sent to a cutesy cartoon squirrel village until he would learn his lesson. "God and the Squirrels" by T.K. Wade is overflowing with fun and comedy throughout. It is filled with hilarious characters and, perhaps, a few villains. As a work of "bizarro fiction," it attempts to make the absurd more plausible and ultimately become a joyful and sometimes a heartwarming experience. Prepare to get squirrely!
