Book Description
The 7th International Conference on Inverse Problems in Engineering (ICIPE), held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, USA, on May 4-6, 2011. This is the seventh International Conference on Inverse Problems in Engineering: Theory and Practice (ICIPE) series, initiated in Palm Coast (USA) in 1993. Noteworthy features of all ICIPE meetings are their balanced focus on theory and applications (and, better yet, the combination of both) and strive to provide an atmosphere aimed at maximizing opportunities for interactions between participants. The previous two ICIPE conferences were held in Paris (France) in 2008 and in Cambridge (UK) in July 2005.

Climate Change Adaptation in Africa
Author: Walter Leal Filho
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319495208
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 746
Book Description
This collection showcases experiences from research and field projects in climate change adaptation on the African continent. It includes a set of papers presented at a symposium held in Addis Abeba in February 2016, which brought together international experts to discuss “fostering African resilience and capacity to adapt.” The papers introduce a wide range of methodological approaches and practical case studies to show how climate change adaptation can be implemented in regions and countries across the continent. Responding to the need for more cross-sectoral interaction among the various stakeholders working in the field of climate change adaptation, the book fosters the exchange of information on best practices across the African continent.

Challenges and Opportunities for Agricultural Intensification of the Humid Highland Systems of Sub-Saharan Africa
Author: Bernard Vanlauwe
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319076620
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 399
Book Description
The humid highlands in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are characterized by high population densities and require intensification. The Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA) has set up a research for development platform in various mandate areas in DR Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda, aiming to identify improved production, market, and nutrition options and facilitating the access for development partners to these options. This platform is supported by capacity building, multi-stakeholder dialogue, and monitoring and evaluation efforts. The conference, facilitated by CIALCA, aimed to (i) take stock of the state-of the art in agricultural intensification in the highlands of SSA and (ii) chart the way forward for agricultural research for development in the humid highlands of SSA, and more specifically in the recently launched Humidtropics Consortium Research Programme, through keynote, oral and poster presentations, and strategic panel discussions.

Commemorations And Memorials: Exploring The Human Face Of Anatomy
Author: Goran Strkalj
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9813143169
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 215
Book Description
A major component of many modern human anatomy programs is commemorating people who have donated their body for education and research. In addition, some institutions have also organized memorial places to honor the body donors. This book is an edited volume which explores the phenomena of commemorations and memorials in anatomy. It includes both descriptive papers focusing on the content of the ceremonies and theoretical papers contextualizing and examining these within the broader ethical, scientific, medical and educational frameworks. Building up on the idea of a community of practice, the main objective of the volume is to enhance the exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences. The concepts of 'commemoration' and 'memorial' in anatomy programs are presented as emerging. They are seen as phenomena that will continue to evolve and ramify within different cultural and educational contexts, and this volume is expected to facilitate these processes. Indeed, meager literature on the topic indicates potentially enormous practical value in sharing and combining practices from different cultural and teaching/research traditions.

What Do Science, Technology, and Innovation Mean from Africa?
Author: Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262533901
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
Explorations of science, technology, and innovation in Africa not as the product of “technology transfer” from elsewhere but as the working of African knowledge. In the STI literature, Africa has often been regarded as a recipient of science, technology, and innovation rather than a maker of them. In this book, scholars from a range of disciplines show that STI in Africa is not merely the product of “technology transfer” from elsewhere but the working of African knowledge. Their contributions focus on African ways of looking, meaning-making, and creating. The chapter authors see Africans as intellectual agents whose perspectives constitute authoritative knowledge and whose strategic deployment of both endogenous and inbound things represents an African-centered notion of STI. “Things do not (always) mean the same from everywhere,” observes Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga, the volume's editor. Western, colonialist definitions of STI are not universalizable. The contributors discuss topics that include the trivialization of indigenous knowledge under colonialism; the creative labor of chimurenga, the transformation of everyday surroundings into military infrastructure; the role of enslaved Africans in America as innovators and synthesizers; the African ethos of “fixing”; the constitutive appropriation that makes mobile technologies African; and an African innovation strategy that builds on domestic capacities. The contributions describe an Africa that is creative, technological, and scientific, showing that African STI is the latest iteration of a long process of accumulative, multicultural knowledge production. Contributors Geri Augusto, Shadreck Chirikure, Chux Daniels, Ron Eglash, Ellen Foster, Garrick E. Louis, D. A. Masolo, Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga, Neda Nazemi, Toluwalogo Odumosu, Katrien Pype, Scott Remer

Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods
Author: Ali Mohammad-Djafari
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0792322800
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 450
Book Description
The Twelfth International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Sciences and Engineering (MaxEnt 92) was held in Paris, France, at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), July 19-24, 1992. It is important to note that, since its creation in 1980 by some of the researchers of the physics department at the Wyoming University in Laramie, this was the second time that it took place in Europe, the first time was in 1988 in Cambridge. The two specificities of MaxEnt workshops are their spontaneous and informal charac ters which give the participants the possibility to discuss easily and to make very fruitful scientific and friendship relations among each others. This year's organizers had fixed two main objectives: i) to have more participants from the European countries, and ii) to give special interest to maximum entropy and Bayesian methods in signal and image processing. We are happy to see that we achieved these objectives: i) we had about 100 participants with more than 50 per cent from the European coun tries, ii) we received many papers in the signal and image processing subjects and we could dedicate a full day of the workshop to the image modelling, restoration and recon struction problems.

Book Description
Law and Uncertainty: Risks and Legal Processes examines the role of the law and legal institutions in coping with the risks and uncertainties that pervade our lives. it examines key concerns, such as how issues relating to risks can be dealt with by means of legal processes, and how risks can be controlled through different legal formulations and techniques. The contents cover a wide range of risk issues as they arise in legal contexts, ranging from the problems of assessing risks within the criminal justice system To The difficulties that judges encounter in processing risk-laden issues through the courts. This study brings together papers delivered at the WG Hart Legal Workshop of 1995, held at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies in London.
