Book Description
Sao Paulo is the sprawling intellectual capital of Brazil. There is no place better in the entire country for nightlife, music, theater and concerts. Whether you're relaxing on the beach, admiring modern or historical buildings or shopping in local markets or upscale stores, this handbook helps you pick out the best places to visit in this culturally diverse city. Take time to prepare for your trip to Sao Paulo, rather than just wishing for the best when you arrive. There are many amazing places in Sao Paulo, and you won't want to miss them, especially if you only have a few days to spend here. We'll give you low-price, mid-range and luxury choices for accommodations and restaurants, so you can enjoy your stay, regardless of your budget. We'll tell you where to party, too! We offer you tips and recommendations to make your trip more enjoyable, and places to do anything you might wish to do on your trip. We'll simplify your planning and give you more time to explore new places when you arrive. The People of Sao PauloSao Paulo is a state name and a city name. But we're talking specifically about the city in this travel guide. 11 million people call Sao Paulo home. Sao Paulo is likely the most multicultural Brazil city. Immigrants have arrived from all over the world. Many came from Italy - there are six million residents of Sao Paulo who can trace their roots to Italy. There is also a large Portuguese community in Sao Paulo. About three million Paulistanos have Portuguese origins. There are over 60,000 Jews in Sao Paulo, and the city also boasts large numbers of German, Lithuanian and Spanish immigrants and children of immigrants. LanguageThe main language in Sao Paulo is Portuguese, and it has been this way since 1750, when it was introduced through immigration and in schools. The original, older language, Tupi Austral, lost ground then and is now virtually extinct. The Portuguese idiom spoken in metropolitan Sao Paulo is also affected by many immigrants from the Arabian Peninsula, Italy, Spain, Germany and Japan. The local dialect reflects the influence of these languages. Other languages used in Sao Paulo include Asian-based languages. The city has more Japanese people than any other place outside of Japan. Most Japanese Paulistanos now speak Portuguese, although they are fluent in the language of Japan, as well. Some people who are descendants of Koreans and Chinese can still speak the languages of their ancestors. German is spoken in some areas of Sao Paulo, as are Eastern European and Russian languages. Ancestors of Hungarian immigrants also use their native tongue when speaking to each other. Here is a quick preview of what you will learn in this tourist guide: * Helpful information about Sao Paulo, Brazil* Flying into the city* Transportation tips while you're in town* Why Sao Paulo is such a diverse tourist spot and what you will find most remarkable about it* Information on luxury and budget accommodations and what you'll get for your money* The currency used in Sao Paulo* Tourist attractions you should make time to see* Other attractions for entertainment and culture* Events that may be running during your stay* Tips on the best places to eat & drink for all price points, whether you want simple fare, worldwide dishes or Mediterranean flavor
