Sanitary and Social Lectures and Essays (Classic Reprint)
Author: Charles Kingsley
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331065906
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 454
Book Description
Excerpt from Sanitary and Social Lectures and Essays I have been asked to speak a few words to you on a lady's work in a country parish. I shall confine myself rather to principles than to details; and the first principle which I would impress on you is, that we must all be just before we are generous. I must, indeed, speak plainly on this point. A woman's first duties are to her own family, her own servants. Be not deceived: if anyone cannot rule her own household, she cannot rule the Church of Cod. If anyone cannot sympathise with the servants with whom she is in contact all day long, she will not really sympathise with the poor whom she sees once a week. I know the temptation not to believe this is very great. It seems so much easier to women to do something for tho poor, than for their own ladies' maids, and housemaids, and cooks. And why? Modernity's Classics
Author: Sarah C. Humphreys
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642330711
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 351
Book Description
This book presents critical studies of modern reconfigurations of conceptions of the past, of the 'classical', and of national heritage. Its scope is global (China, India, Egypt, Iran, Judaism, the Greco-Roman world) and inter-disciplinary (textual philology, history of art and architecture, philosophy, gardening). Its emphasis is on the complexity of the modernization process and of reactions to it: ideas and technologies travelled from India to Iran and from Japan to China, while reactions show tensions between museumization and the recreation of 'presence'. It challenges readers to rethink the assumptions of the disciplines in which they were trained

De-Scribing Empire
Author: Alan Lawson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134846053
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
De-Scribing Empire is a stunning collection of first-class essays. Collectively they examine the formative role of books, writing and textuality in imperial control and the fashioning of colonial world-views. The volume as a whole puts forward strategies for understanding and neutralising that control, and as such is a major contribution to the field. It will be invaluable for students in post-colonialist criticism.
