Food prices across the world rose dramatically between 2006 and 2008. The causes of the price rise were complex, and the event has led to heightened concerns regarding the implica-tions of rising food prices on the prevalence of food insecurity and household welfare, particu-larly in developing countries. Given widespread and chronic malnutrition in India and the country's large share of the world's total food-insecure population, this report estimates how Indian households coped with the rise in domestic food prices that accompanied global price patterns in 2006-08. Exploiting differential spikes in rice and wheat prices, we find that house-holds affected the most by rising food prices significantly decreased dietary diversity, delayed medical expenditures, and delayed purchases of clothing and durable goods. Given the existence of significant food and nonfood coping mechanisms, findings suggest that the rise in food staple prices in India had wide-ranging effects on household welfare.

Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of rising wheat prices " during the 2007/08 global food crisis " on food security in Afghanistan. Exploiting the temporal stratification of a unique nationally-representative household survey, the analysis finds evidence of large declines in real per capita food consumption and in food security (per capita calorie intake and household dietary diversity) corresponding to the price shocks. The data reveal smaller price elasticities with respect to calories than with respect to food consumption, suggesting that households trade off quality for quantity as they move toward staple foods and away from nutrient-rich foods such as meat and vegetables. In addition, there is increased demand in the face of price increases (Giffen good properties) for wheat products in urban areas. This study improves on country-level simulation studies by providing estimates of actual household wellbeing before and during the height of the global food crisis in one of the world's poorest, most food-insecure countries.

Abstract: This study explores the dietary and behavioural coping strategies employed by low-income households in urban poverty pockets of Greater Cairo in response to food price fluctuations. It investigates the impact of nutrition-related coping behaviours on the food security of households, focusing namely on children and youth. The study uses qualitative research in the form of in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and key informant interviews with mothers residing in one of the largest informal settlements of Cairo, to arrive at an in-depth analysis of the problem. The research reveals that low-income households employ poor coping strategies in response to high food prices that could potentially further their food insecurity and perpetuate the cycle of poverty within which they live. As will be discussed in this paper, replacing nutritious foods with cheaper alternatives, eliminating meals, rationing household consumption, and resorting to dangerous eating behaviours are among many of the detrimental coping strategies households were found to employ. The study concludes with policy recommendations and future courses of action to combat the progression of food insecurity among vulnerable households and prevent the further decline of nutritional statuses in response to increasing food prices.
