Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900418581X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 644
Book Description
Thirty-four experts on marine affairs and the law of the sea, from six continents, examine the emerging challenges for our World Ocean. Publisher: Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 72
Book Description
The Third Meeting of Regional Fishery Body Secretariats Network (RSN-3) was held in Rome, Italy, from 7 to 8 February 2011. It addressed many pressing issues relating to global and regional fisheries governance, including illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, overcapacity, the ecosystem approach to fisheries management, small-scale and inland fisheries and the outcomes of the twenty-ninth Session of FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) held in Rome during the previous week. Twenty-eight Regional Fishery Body (RFB) Secretariats were represented at the meeting with varying responsibilities over inland, coastal and marine fisheries and aquaculture, as well as four intergovernmental organizations. The meeting reached a number of conclusions regarding matters that merit the attention of RFBs, governments and FAO. The RSN also issued a Statement responding to unsubstantiated information that had been published about RFBs and elaborating the challenges and achievements of RFBs.

International Fisheries Management
Author: Stuart Kaye
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 636
Book Description
Kaye (law, James Cook U., Queensland) analyzes two principal approaches to fisheries management with reference to international law. The first approach, reflected in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, aims to maximize the yield of particular fish stocks. The second is founded on the precautionary approach and the associated concept of risk assessment, which take into account the management of the entire ecosystem. Kaye examines the difficulties common to both approaches in the area of compliance and presents suggestions for improving the management of stocks. His analysis focuses on the Bering Sea "Doughnut Hole" Convention and the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. c. Book News Inc.

Advances in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing for Fisheries and Aquaculture
Author: Geoffery J. Meaden
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)
ISBN:
Category : Aquaculture
Languages : en
Pages : 112
Book Description
The publication is an easy-to-understand publication that emphasizes the fundamental skills and processes associated with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing. The first chapter initially puts the array of spatially related problems into perspective and discusses the earlier applications of GIS and remote sensing. Chapters, 2, 3 and 4 outline what are considered to be the basics on which GIS can function, i.e. hardware and software; spatial data; and how GIS systems themselves are best implemented. Chapter 5 looks at preparing the data for GIS use and Chapter 6 explores what remote sensing consists of and the main purposes for its use. Chapter 7 discusses the functional tools and techniques offered by typical GIS software packages. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 examine respectively, the current issues and status, including extensive case studies, of the application of GIS and remote sensing to aquaculture, to inland fisheries and to marine fisheries.

Environmental Change and Agricultural Sustainability in the Mekong Delta
Author: Mart A. Stewart
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940070934X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 455
Book Description
The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the world. The Mekong River fans out over an area of about 40,000 sq kilometers and over the course of many millennia has produced a region of fertile alluvial soils and constant flows of energy. Today about a fourth of the Delta is under rice cultivation, making this area one of the premier rice granaries in the world. The Delta has always proven a difficult environment to manipulate, however, and because of population pressures, increasing acidification of soils, and changes in the Mekong’s flow, environmental problems have intensified. The changing way in which the region has been linked to larger flows of commodities and capital over time has also had an impact on the region: For example, its re-emergence in recent decades as a major rice-exporting area has linked it inextricably to global markets and their vicissitudes. And most recently, the potential for sea level increases because of global warming has added a new threat. Because most of the region is on average only a few meters above sea level and because any increase of sea level will change the complex relationship between tides and down-river water flow, the Mekong Delta is one of the areas in the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. How governmental policy and resident populations have in the past and will in coming decades adapt to climate change as well as several other emerging or ongoing environmental and economic problems is the focus of this collection.
