A Marine Corps combat veteran with twenty years of service describes her professional battle against gender bias in the Marines and the lessons it holds for other arenas. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Kate Germano arrived at Parris Island convinced that if she expected more of the female recruits just coming into Corps, she could raise historically low standards for female performance and make women better Marines. One year after she took command of the Fourth Recruit Training Battalion, shooting qualifications of the women under her command equaled those of men, injuries had decreased, and unit morale had noticeably improved. Then the Marines fired her. This is the story of Germano's struggle to achieve equality of performance and opportunity for female Marines against an entrenched male-dominated status quo. Germano charges that the men above her in the chain of command were too invested in perpetuating the subordinate role of women in the Corps to allow her to prove that the female Marine can be equal to her male counterpart. She notes that the Marine Corps continues to be the only service where men and women train separately in boot camp or basic training. Meanwhile, in the U.S. Army, women have already become Army Rangers and applied to be infantry officers. Germano addresses the Marine Corps' $35-million gender-integration study, which shows that all-male squads perform at a higher level than mixed male-female squads. This study flies in the face of the results she demonstrated with the all-female Fourth Battalion and raises questions about the Marine Corps' willingness to let women succeed. "This study identifies approaches for bolstering recruiting of women into the armed services during the years in which ground combat jobs are transitioning to include women. RAND conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with new recruits, recruiters, and recruiting leadership. Several themes emerged from these discussions. Many female recruits in our focus groups preferred female recruiters and female-specific events. Many male recruits in our focus groups reported not being influenced by the policy change to open combat jobs to women. Recruiters and recruits in our focus groups reported dissatisfaction with what they view as burdensome administrative requirements. Both recruiters and recruits recommended launching advertising campaigns showing women serving alongside men in a wide range of military jobs, and debunking stereotypes of military service. Finally, commanders of the recruiting services reported concern over resources available to them in the current environment. We recommend that resources be set aside to specifically target outreach to women, that the services increase the proportion of recruiters who are women and increase their visibility at recruiting events, and that the services work to reduce administrative burdens on recruiters and recruits."--Publisher's description.

The objective of phase one of this research was to assess the degree to which currently employed Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) employees would be affected by a more aggressive policy to recruit and retain women and minority engineers. The DOT's "Future Agenda" was used as a baseline to focus on efforts to update and implement a recruitment plan that would target underrepresented classes. The primary question that emerged out of phase one was how could the Iowa DOT strengthen its ties with Iowa State University (ISU) to produce increased numbers of in-state applicants for engineering positions. This introduced the objective of phase two, which was to identify problem areas resulting in unacceptably high attrition rates for women, minorities, and to a lesser degree, Caucasian men in the College of Engineering at ISU, particularly Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE). Past research has focused on (1) projected shortages of qualified civil engineers, (2) the obstacles confronting women in a traditionally male-oriented profession, and (3) minorities who are often unprepared to succeed in the rigors of an engineering curriculum because of a lack of academic preparedness. The researchers in this study, in contrast, chose to emphasize institutional reasons why women, minorities, and some Caucasian men often feel a sense of isolation in the engineering program. It was found that one of the key obstacles to student retention is the lack of visibility of the civil engineering profession. The visibility problem led to the hypothesis that many engineering students do not have a clear conception of what the practice of civil engineering entails. It was found that this may be a better predictor of attrition than the stereotypical assumption that a majority of students leave their engineering programs because they are not academically able to compete. Recommendations are offered to strengthen the ties between ISU's Department of CCE and the Iowa DOT in order to counter the visibility issue. It was concluded that this is a vital step because over the next 5-15 years 40% of DOT engineers currently employed will be phasing into retirement. If the DOT expects to draw sufficient numbers of engineers from within the state of Iowa and if increasing numbers of them are to be women and minorities, a university connection will help to produce the qualified applicants to fulfill this need

"Demographic and technological trends have yielded new forms of work that are increasingly more precarious, globalized, and brand centered. Some of these shifts have led to a marked decrease in the visibility of work or workers. This edited collection examines situations in which technology and employment practices hide labor within the formal paid labor market, with implications for workplace activism, social policy, and law. In some cases, technological platforms, space, and temporality hide workers and sometimes obscure their tasks as well. In other situations, workers may be highly visible--indeed, the employer may rely upon the workers' aesthetics to market the branded product--but their aesthetic labor is not seen as work. In still other cases, the work occurs within a social interaction and appears as leisure--a voluntary or chosen activity--rather than as work. Alternatively, the workers themselves may be conceptualized as consumers rather than as workers.
