Book Description
Structural grade concretes with high volume of fly ash (HVFA) have been developed in Australia since 1991. These are concretes with fly ash making up to 50 percent by weight of the total binder. In this paper, mix design method and mix design data for HVFA concretes and their mechanical properties are given. The advantages of HVFA concretes in terms of improved volume stability and durability compared with portland cement concretes of equivalent 28-day compressive strength are discussed. The suitability of these type of concretes are highlighted with respect to their properties and construction demands. Example of applications in Australia and overseas are given.

Book Description
While the use of small proportion of fly ash in the binder of concrete is well understood and accepted in many countries, the technology relating to the use of high volume (40% by weight or more of binder) of fly ash in structural concrete is a more recent development. This paper discusses the development of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete in Australia and overseas with specific emphasis on its potential applications. Mix design method and data are described. It has been found that HVFA concrete can be designed within the constraints of the present Australian code of practice to give equivalent 28 day compressive strength to plain cement concrete. However, the volume stability and durability properties of HVFA concretes have been found to be significantly better than the equivalent plain cement concrete. With its inherent increased cohesiveness and long term properties, potential applications are identified and discussed with respect to the specific properties.

Book Description
Since it was first recognized as a mineral admixture for concrete in the 1930's, fly ash has been the subject of worldwide study as researchers work to maximize its economical and environmental benefits. In recent years, investigations have focused on the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of fly ash and their specific correlation to the performance of concrete. This book collects the latest results from these various studies and offers a complete review of the advantages of fly ash as an admixture in concrete, including strength development and improved chemical resistance and durability. A review of the current international standards on fly ash usage is provided, in addition to an extensive reference list and a complete survey of various other fly ash products, such as bricks, mineral wool and gypsum wall boards, as well as the use of fly ash in waste management.

Book Description
A best practices guide is developed from a synthesis of recent research on high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete mixtures. These best practices can be applied by the concrete construction industry to achieve desired properties and to ensure the (high) performance of HVFA concrete mixtures in practice. As such, the report considers all aspects of HVFA concrete production, from the characterization of the starting materials, through mixture proportioning and curing options to achieve desired properties, to the in-place early-age and long-term performance of the concrete in its fresh and hardened states. Both mechanical and transport properties are considered in detail. Perspective is established based on a brief review of current practices being employed nationally. Each topical section is concluded with a practice-based set of recommendations for the design and construction community. The report is intended to serve as a valuable resource to these communities, providing both a research summary and a guide to practical steps that can be taken to achieve the optimum performance of these sustainable concrete mixtures.

Book Description
Practical production of ordinary and special, high performance concretes and their behaviour and properties when fresh are the main themes of this book. It derives from the International RILEM Conference held in Paisley, Scotland in June 1996, and represents the culmination of the work of two RILEM Technical Committees (145 WSM Workability of Special Mixes, and 150 ECM Efficiency of Concrete Mixers). Very significant advances have been made recently in the development of concrete with outstanding properties. Such advances in research must be matched by progress in the technology of concrete production. This book focuses on production methods and on workability and handling, two fundamental and closely linked stages of the concrete construction process. It has a strongly practical emphasis, with many contributions showing how to build effectively using the many high performance concretes which have progressed from research into construction in recent years. The main themes covered are: production mixers and mixing processes; production methods; sprayed and very dry precasting mixes; fibre reinforced concrete; flowing and superfluid mixes; rheology; test methods; mix design and models; special cements and concretes.
