Banking Structures in Major Countries
Author: George G. Kaufman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401129460
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 621
Book Description
The ongoing globalization of financial markets has increased the import ance to users of financial services, policy-makers and financial analysts of understanding the structure and operation of banking systems in other countries as well as that in their own country. This volume contributes to such an understanding. The structure and operation of the banking system are described for 10 important countries, plus the European Economic Community, under one cover. The contributing authors are knowledgable and widely respected experts. The author, or at least one of the coauthors, of each chapter is a resident of the country described. Each chapter follows a broadly similar outline, although the attention devoted to any particular area varies substantially according to authors' perceptions of its relative importance in the particular country. The chapters spotlight the similarities and differences among the structures. The volume should serve as both a handy and authoritative reference guide for practitioners, regulators and students of international banking. An early benefit of the book was an international conference held in Chicago in the fall of 1989 on the world integration of financial markets. A number of the authors of the chapters presented brief versions of their papers. The conference was sponsored jointly by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the MidAmerica Institute. The audience was primarily senior officers and regulators of financial institutions in the midwest. The conference generated considerable interest in both the subject matter and the contents of this book.

Emerging Financial Markets In The Global Economy
Author: David Nickerson
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814495069
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 287
Book Description
The rapid emergence of active financial markets in a number of developing and transition countries during the 1990s is a momentous phenomenon. Until recently, most developing countries severely manipulated and repressed their financial markets. The dramatic increase in the influence of neo-liberal thinking and laissez-faire governance in developing countries has recently led to serious capital market reform in scores of countries. Most countries without financial market reform are anxiously studying their successful neighbors in order to adopt policies, programs, and regulations that have a proven track record. This collection of papers addresses many of the important issues raised by these dramatic changes, including restructuring pension systems, organizing new equity markets, designing financial systems to deal with systemic risk, dealing with the overhang and bad debts, and attracting foreign direct investments. Several papers deal with informal credit markets, examining the effect of informal finance on economic development and the exponential growth in microfinance by private financial institutions in Latin America and in the United States. The book is intended for policy makers and scholars interested in capital markets in developing and transition economies. It is also suitable for use as a supplementary text in upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in development finance.

Fragile by Design
Author: Charles W. Calomiris
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691168350
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 584
Book Description
Why stable banking systems are so rare Why are banking systems unstable in so many countries—but not in others? The United States has had twelve systemic banking crises since 1840, while Canada has had none. The banking systems of Mexico and Brazil have not only been crisis prone but have provided miniscule amounts of credit to business enterprises and households. Analyzing the political and banking history of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil through several centuries, Fragile by Design demonstrates that chronic banking crises and scarce credit are not accidents. Calomiris and Haber combine political history and economics to examine how coalitions of politicians, bankers, and other interest groups form, why they endure, and how they generate policies that determine who gets to be a banker, who has access to credit, and who pays for bank bailouts and rescues. Fragile by Design is a revealing exploration of the ways that politics inevitably intrudes into bank regulation.

Aspects of Globalisation
Author: Christopher Tsoukis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441988815
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 255
Book Description
Reflecting on the breadth of its scope, Aspects of Globalisation is intended to serve a varied audience. Being at the forefront of research, it should appeal to academics, researchers and postgraduate students interested in new approaches and ideas for future research. To this end, the editors have encouraged the contributors to pursue varied themes and raise new issues, approach their subject matter in an analytically rigorous way, and to include fairly extended review sections within their papers, so as to make them useful to a wider readership. Furthermore, diverse methodologies are followed, including the widespread use of state-of-the-art econometrics, reflecting the recent trend in economic analysis. Equally importantly, many of the papers offer clear-cut policy conclusions and should therefore be of direct relevance to policy-minded analysts and policy-makers. We thus hope that the papers included here will provoke further research and ideas as well as contribute to ongoing policy debates. Its diversity, rigour and scope should be positive attributes of the volume and should make it a useful source of information for researchers and policy-makers alike.
