Book Description
Abstract: Information was developed primarily for use with young children with or without mental retardation who may also have neurological impairment. Many of the suggestions can be used with children with cerebral palsy. Guidelines were developed for the feeding of children who: prefer strained food over more solid food; do not want to be touched and are hypersensitive around the face and mouth; gag frequently or vomit food; refuse certain foods and throw eating tantrums; refuse to drink from a glass or cup; have poor control of jaw muscles; push food out of the mouth with tongue; cannot close or use lips to remove food from spoon; do not chew; drool profusely; or become physically tight in the mouth or throat while eating. Parents should work closely with the child's therapist or teacher to adjust to changes in eating habits as the child grows. Since such children will have individual differences, the developed program guidelines should only be used as a possible procedural outline in changing behavior. (wz).
