Book Description
This book brings together two of the 'hottest issues' in current management thinking: the impact of privatization on the performance and behaviour of the companies involved, and the increasingly important role of purchasing and supplier relationships. The notion that efficiency is improved with privatization is critically examined. The authors examine whether privatized organizations have recognized the importance of the procurement role and developed both their procurement functions and supplier relationships so as to enhance competitiveness. Grounded in economic theory, and providing rich case study material, this volume makes a major contribution to an increasingly important area. It will be of interest to students and researchers in economics, business and management studies.

Book Description
A supply chain comprises different actors existing in different countries, including suppliers, producers, and customers. Clothes are supplied from Asia to all other regions; most coffee beans are supplied from South America; and cocoa is produced in Africa. Protecting the rights of people who produce goods in different countries is essential. In fact, according to this evolutionary law, companies need to identify, analyze, and prioritize the risks in their supply chains, and new policies must be established based on these results. New measures are taken to prevent or minimize violations of human rights and damage to the environment. Companies also need to set up grievance channels for people in the supply chains for regular reporting on supply chain practices. The German Supply Chain Act gives consumers the security that companies are managed based on fair production, and many similar legislations are likely to follow in other nations. Businesses around the world must prepare for these types of policies to impact their own supply chain management strategy before they are enforced if they wish to avoid revenue-impacting delays. Government Impact on Sustainable and Responsible Supply Chain Management is edited by Atour Taghipour, with about a decade of experience as a director in Automobile and High-Tech Industries, provides new and innovative ways to integrate social and environmental analysis into global value chains and adapt the law that regulates corporate responsibility for the observance of sustainability and human rights in the supply chain. This book is ideal for professionals and researchers working in governmental and private organizations in supply chain management, operations management, logistics, and operations research. Moreover, the book provides insights and support for executives in managing expertise, knowledge, information, and organizational development in different work communities and environments.

Book Description
Experts evaluate the varied outcomes of privatization experiences in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK. The trend toward privatization, which began with privatization experiments in the UK under Margaret Thatcher and the deregulation of the telecommunications sector in the United States, has attracted the attention of policymakers over the past two decades. Privatization is broadly supported by most academic economists, but the results of actual privatization efforts seem mixed. In the UK, for example, telecom rates fell sharply after privatization, but privatized rail service was widely perceived to have declined dramatically in quality. In this CESifo volume, international experts examine the experiences of 10 EU countries, evaluating the real outcomes of privatization policies in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK.The effects of privatization--which includes not only changes in ownership of public activitiesand entities but also liberalization of markets and deregulation--are difficult to distinguish from the effects of other economywide influences. The studies in this volume meet this methodological challenge by using a well-defined set of criteria, including reducing consumer prices, increasing quantity, and improving quality, by which to make their assessments. Background chapters provide a conceptual framework for considering the issues. Contributors Pablo Arocena, Sean D. Barrett, Ansgar Belke, Michel Berne, Henrik Christoffersen, Andrea Goldstein, Günter Knieps, David Newbery, Martin Paldam, David Parker, Gérard Pogorel, Friedrich Schneider, Eric van Damme, Ingo Vogelsang, Johan Willner

Book Description
This is Volume II of Professor Parker's authoritative Official History of Privatisation, covering the period from the re-election of Margaret Thatcher in 1987 to the election of Tony Blair in 1997. Volume II considers in detail several of the major privatisations, including those of airports, steel, water, electricity, coal and the railways, as well as a number of smaller ones. Each privatisation involved major challenges in terms of industrial restructuring, organising successful sales and, in a number of cases, establishing effective regulatory regimes. The policy evolved and new methods of selling and regulating were put in place that enabled further disposals to occur. Monolithic nationalised industries with their emphasis on the benefits of economies of scale, vertical integration and rationalisation, were replaced by industrial structures rooted in the importance of commercial management, risk taking and competition. In government departments and parts of the National Health Service, direct employees were replaced by private contractors, and private investment became a characteristic of public infrastructure in the form of PFI/PPP schemes. This study draws heavily on the official records of the British government, to which the author was given full access and on interviews with the leading figures involved in each of the privatisations, including ex-ministers, civil servants, business and City figures, as well as academics that have studied the subject. This book will of great interest to students of privatisation, British political history and of business and economics in general.

Book Description
Recent years have seen a growing role for private military contractors in national and international security. To understand the reasons for this, Elke Krahmann examines changing models of the state, the citizen and the soldier in the UK, the US and Germany. She focuses on both the national differences with regard to the outsourcing of military services to private companies and their specific consequences for the democratic control over the legitimate use of armed force. Tracing developments and debates from the late eighteenth century to the present, she explains the transition from the centralized warfare state of the Cold War era to the privatized and fragmented security governance, and the different national attitudes to the privatization of force.
