Book Description
Cyclotron Waves in Plasma is a four-chapter text that covers the basic physical concepts of the theory of cyclotron waves and cyclotron instabilities, brought about by the existence of steady or alternating plasma currents flowing perpendicular to the magnetic field. This book considers first a wide range of questions associated with the linear theory of cyclotron oscillations in equilibrium plasmas and in electron plasmas in metals and semiconductors. The next chapter deals with the parametric excitation of electron cyclotron oscillations in plasma in an alternating electric field. A chapter focuses on plasma turbulence, which results from the development of cyclotron instabilities. The last chapter discusses pertinent experimental data concerning cyclotron waves in plasma. The book is intended for specialists in plasma physics and a number of related fields, including the physics of the ionosphere, solar wind and, metals, as well as for students and teachers who are specializing in these subjects.

Book Description
General solutions for the transmitted and reflected waves in integral form are obtained for a plane wave of arbitrary time dependence, normally incident upon a semiinfinite, cold, collisionless, homogeneous, anisotropic ionized medium. The special case of an isotropic plasma with an incident wave of harmonic time dependence is also investigated. (Author).

Book Description
TO THE SECOND EDITION In the nine years since this book was first written, rapid progress has been made scientifically in nuclear fusion, space physics, and nonlinear plasma theory. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Book Description
The temporal behavior of a large-amplitude whistler mode is analyzed in an anisotropic plasma. The nonlinear equation is solved for the wave amplitude as a function of time. It is found that, in the t approaches 0+ limit, the solution reproduces the linear theory. In the t approaches infinity limit the author finds that the amplitude approaches a limiting value, i.e. saturation sets in. Arguments are then given for the existence of frequency bands for which the linear growth rate and the nonlinear value of the saturated logarithmic decrement are of opposite sign. This means that for these frequencies, the linear and nonlinear theory are in conflict in their predictions of ultimate growth or damping of the wave. The reasons for and implications of this phenomenon are discussed, and a comparison with nonlinear electrostatic modes is made. (Author).
