Book Description
Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book Description
Excerpt from Hours With Nature Should the following pages serve in any way to stimulate in our young men a love for the various interesting natural objects which surround us, my pleasant labours will not have been undertaken in vain. I am greatly indebted to Professor D. D. Cunningham, C.I.E., F.R.S., and to Professor F. J. Rowe, M.A., of the Presidency College, Calcutta, for their valuable corrections and suggestions in the preparation of the book; in fact, the idea of writing these essays was first suggested by Professor Rowe. Book Description
Excerpt from Outings at Odd Times Having an outdoor book in hand, when and how should it be read? It is no doubt very tempting to think of a shady nook, or babbling brook, or both, in connection with the latest out door volume. Possibly, as you start out for a quiet day, you string together a bit of rhyme con cerning the book, as Leigh Hunt did and others have done since. It is a common practice to carry a book into the fields, but not a logical one. How can a book, even one of outdoor topics, compete with Nature? Certainly if Nature is to the reader but a convenient room, a lighter and more airy one than any at home, does it not sig nify a serious lack in the mind of that person? Book Description
Excerpt from Odd Hours of a Physician The antecedents of this little volume are found in the circumstances, that the author having written a book which was not without a satisfactory share of success, it brought from his publisher a request for a second; and this so persuasively worded - as reference was had to the banker - that to have denied it would have been to admit that a person may be afflicted with the cacoethes scribendi, and at the same time be insusceptible to the solid arguments of the book-makers, - a thing, so far as the author can learn, never yet known, and not well to be made a precedent by anybody. Terms settled (it is comfortable to have all responsi bility on the back of the publisher), it remained Simply to decide as to the nature of the new book, and to secure consent to the employment upon the title-page of a name differing from that Upon the first book, as well as that on the record page of the author's family Bible not that a nom de plume designates an especial modesty, or is indicative of any particular indifference.
