Numerical solutions of the boundary layer equations with arbitrary initial profiles and an assigned constant wall shear stress were carried out. Results show that after an initial non-similar flow all initial profiles for incompressible flow asymptotically approach similar profiles corresponding exactly to the Falkner-Skan similar solution. The streamwise distance required for any arbitrary initial profile to approach this similar profile depends upon the extent of departure of the initial profile from the beta = 1/2 similar profile (the larger the difference the longer the distance). For compressible boundary layers, constant wall shear stress solutions give rise to asymptotic locally similar profiles, with no particular similar profile having been determined in the present analysis. A new approach to the numerical solution of the steady boundary layer equations is presented. The technique is developed in detail here for incompressible, laminar problems; the extension to compressible and/or turbulent flow is straightforward. Normal derivatives are approximated by finite differences yielding a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations which is integrated in the streamwise direction starting from an initial velocity profile. The method is applicable to arbitrary choices of the initial profile, the pressure gradient and/or the injection or suction distribution. The classical Howarth Problem and the boundary layer on a circular cylinder are solved as test cases; velocity profiles, skin friction and the separation point are all predicted accurately. The solution for a flat plate with constant injection is then presented and compared with previous approximate results. As a final example, flow around a porous circular cylinder with various rates of injection is treated. (Author).

Iterative finite-difference techniques are developed for integrating the boundary-layer equations, without approximation, through a region of reversed flow. The numerical procedures are used to calculate incompressible laminar separated flows and to investigate the conditions for regular behavior at the point of separation. Regular flows are shown to be characterized by an integrable saddle-type singularity that makes it difficult to obtain numerical solutions which pass continuously into the separated region. The singularity is removed and continuous solutions ensured by specifying the wall shear distribution and computing the pressure gradient as part of the solution. Calculated results are presented for several separated flows and the accuracy of the method is verified. A computer program listing and complete solution case are included.
