This book develops the thesis that Evangelical theology not only cannot afford to avoid engaging with the philosophy of neo-pragmatism, but it can also benefit from the proposals of some of its leading exponents, especially Donald Davidson. Three different themes run throughout the book: meaning epistemic justification, and ontology. How can theologians be confident of the meanings ascribed to religious beliefs in the wake of the dissolution of the very concept of meaning and of the analytic-synthetic distinction? Is there any rational fraction between our beliefs, religious or mundane, and some extra-linguistic reality? Is God something more than simply a symbolic construct associated with a certain manner of speaking? The surprising thought of Donald Davidson offers resources for Evangelical theology seeking hopeful answers to these troubling questions. Davidson's rejection of the so-called 'third dogma' of empiricism, namely the dualism of scheme of content, should be welcomed by those defending theological 'rationality' and refuting relativism and incommensurability. Furthermore, his truth-conditional semantics can serve as a check against revisionist accounts of religious beliefs that flaunt the first-person point of view of the religious believer herself. These Davidsonian contributions to an Evangelical theology are, however, balanced by inherent inadequacies which require a theological supplement, which is also a creative proposal calling for: the continued significance of experience in theology beyond the myth of the Given; an understanding of the role of Scripture as both epistemic as well as dispositional; and finally an understanding of the nature of truth as located in the mind of God. Theology After Neo-Pragmatism is both an introduction to an influential philosophical trend, and a critical and constructive theological proposal which is at once scriptural and historicist, pragmatic and realist.

In this work Paul Murray explores which style of rationality is most appropriate to Christian theology in the contemporary pluralist, postfoundationalist, postmodern context. At its heart is a fresh consideration of the American pragmatist tradition, focussing on the writings of Richard Rorty and Nicholas Rescher. Contemporary proposals for Christian theology from post-liberalism to Radical Orthodoxy and beyond have espoused their own methodological paradigms. Those who have ventured into this domain of theological method, however, have usually had to stake their claims vis-a-vis trends in what may be called the contemporary post-al age, whether of the post-modern, post-Christendom, post-Enlightenment, post-Western, or post-colonial varieties. In the ongoing quest for Christian unity, theological controversies and confessional divisions continue to bar the way. In this work, Fernando Canale attempts to overcome Christianity's theological disagreements by placing theological reason-which unwittingly drives these contentions-under critical investigation. In A Criticism of Theological Reason Canale proposes that theology should undertake this investigation independently from previous philosophical interpretations of reason. Thus, a Criticism of Theological Reason requires a careful examination of (1) the phenomenological structure of reason, (2) its presuppositional conditions, and (3) the interpretation of Being as either time or timelessness, within the philosophical, theological, and biblical contexts. The philosophical context clarifies the function of reason in the construction of meaning and the role of the interpretations of Being in the functioning of reason. The theological context illustrates the way in which the classical and modern philosophical interpretations of reason have shaped the constitution of theological meanings (exegesis, creeds, and dogmatics). Finally, through an epistemological analysis of Exodus 3:14, Canale shows that the biblical interpretation of Being provides the necessary ground to free Christian theology from the philosophically originated Onto-theo-logical interpretations of reason replacing it with a biblically originated Theo-onto-logical interpretation of theological reason. Canale hopes that a clearer understanding of reason's workings in theological discourse-particularly the biblical interpretation of Being and reason-will help Christians surmount current theological controversies and foment the ultimate ecumenical goal of Christian unity.

The essays collected in this volume and authored by Sami Pihlström emphasize that our relation to the world we live in and seek to represent and get to know better through our practices of conceptualization and inquiry is irreducibly valuational. There is no way of even approaching, let alone resolving, the philosophical issue of realism without drawing due attention to the ways in which human values are inextricably entangled with even the most purely “factual” projects of inquiry we engage in. This entanglement of the factual and the normative is, as explicitly argued in Chapter 7 but implicitly suggested in all the other chapters as well, both pragmatic (practice-embedded and practice-involving) and transcendental (operating at the level of the necessary conditions for the possibility of our representing and cognizing the world in general). The author claims we need to carefully examine the complex relations of realism, value, and transcendental arguments at the intersection of pragmatism and analytic philosophy.
