The concept that food releases a chemical reaction enhancing our capacity for tolerance and understanding is a common thread in the stories of this book. They take us from WWII Germany to present-day Europe and America . When the author’s daughter, Angie, comes home from school and asks, “Mommy, was grandpa a Nazi?”, the author wants to find who wants to know and meets with Angie’s teacher, Ruth Singer, who is teaching about the Holocaust. They have much in common, and their love of cooking leads to a lifelong friendship. “Gita’s Diary” is about a Polish refugee whose culinary skills help the author’s grandmother and her children to survive while the grandfather is in a Nazi labor camp. In “Gentiles Only”, Ruth Singer discovers that in the 1950’s Jews are not welcome in some Miami Beach hotels. “Forbidden Love” is about Silke, a Norwegian immigrant, who falls in love with Julian, a Black man. She learns that in the 1970’s racially mixed couples are taboo in America . They separate, but a cousin’s magic cooking reunites them. Paul, an American art student in “Aix Marks the Spot”, abandons his prejudice against the Irish when a young Irish pastry chef serves him a delicious dessert. Soon after the 9/11 attack, Claudia, a Catholic Latina, meets Azir, a Muslim, on a cruise ship. In “Plain Couscous” they set aside their religious differences to enjoy each other and Claudia’s picnic. “Mutti’s Story” and “Vati’s Story” helped Angie to understand her grandparents’ experiences during WWII. The stories’ recipes are listed at the end of the chapter. Complete recipes are in the Appendix.

Book Description
"In this powerful story of discovery, a black woman learns by chance the truth about her family's secret Nazi past. Jennifer Teege is 38, married, a mother of two, and ten years into a career in advertising when by chance she pulls a book from the library shelf. The book is about her own family, and its contents will profoundly change her life and lead her down a painful path of self-discovery. Jennifer discovers that her grandfather is Amon Goeth, the brutal Nazi concentration camp commandant who oversaw the clearing of the Krakow ghetto in 1943 as well as the Plaszow concentration camp. He shot hundreds of people and was personally responsible for the deaths of thousands more. Millions of people worldwide know of him through Ralph Fiennes' chilling portrayal in Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List. Guilty of genocide and war crimes, Goeth was hanged in 1946. Teege is his African-German granddaughter. Raised by foster parents, she grew up with no knowledge of the family secret. Now, it unsettles her profoundly. What can she say to her Jewish friends, or to her own children? Who is she - truly? My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me is Teege's searing chronicle of grappling with a haunted past that is suddenly, irrevocably hers. Research into her family takes her to Poland and to Israel, where she had lived for several years in her twenties, and learned fluent Hebrew. Her story was co-written by award-winning journalist Nikola Sellmair who also supplies historical context in a separate, interwoven narrative. Step by step, horrified by her family's dark history, Teege builds the story of her own liberation."--Wheelers.co.nz.

Book Description
Niklas Frank was just seven years old when his father, Hans Frank, Hitler's legal adviser and Governor General of occupied Poland, was executed at Nuremberg as a Nazi war criminal. Throughout his life, Niklas has attempted to come to terms with the enormity of the crimes his father committed, and this remarkable book traces how after years of research he uncovered the extent of the horror unleashed by the man who was known as the butcher of Poland. The Father is an extraordinary account of a scarred son struggling to comprehend the depravity of the acts that were committed by his father. Whereas other descendants of Hitler's henchmen and co-collaborators have tried to explain or to forget the crimes of their forebears, Niklas's disgust for his father's actions is unremitting. This book is his attempt to seek revenge. Featuring forewords by Philippe Sands and Sir Ian Kershaw, The Father is by turns shocking, twisted and heart-rending; a devastating settling of accounts written by a son addressing his father as he pictures him burning in the eternal fires of hell.

Book Description
Much of my childhood memories prevail in my mind. I remember every daunting occurrence that restricted or spoiled my youthful enjoyment. It could be because my early upbringing in Germany was during the worst of times in the last century, the last World War. That wartime was so testing that a small child like me could mature faster to withstand the challenges of staying alive. I survived the brutal war in the caring hands of Mama as a refugee with hunger, sickness, and ever-changing natural hardships. My memories go back to my Papa, a high-ranking Nazi officer who had no respect for his wife and his little girl; my brother, who was born a Hitler baby and whom Papa cherished; Irmgard, Mama's Jewish girlfriend that she hid from the Nazi's, including from Papa; my loving Grandpa and his discomforting second wife, who lived on a beautiful farm bordering a green forest close to where my aunt and cousins lived. The war fragmented us apart. I consider it a miracle to have lived and grown through that brutal war, surviving to tell the story to the present generation. My journey to America was paved by the outcome of the war itself. Leaving my memories behind, I entered into a new world with my loving husband beside me. I thrived and climbed mountains to succeed to make all things possible. It made me become the person I am today.
