Hacia finales del decenio de 1970, la migración interna en los países de América Latina y el Caribe fue objeto de numerosas investigaciones nacionales y regionales y llevó a una amplia discusión política y académica. Posteriormente, en los decenios de 1980 y 1990, el estudio de la migración interna se contrajo. Hay argumentos y evidencia fragmentaria y puntual para señalar que algunos cambios estructurales modificaron el patrón migratorio y lo convirtieron en predominantemente urbano-urbano.
