Author: Albin Wallace
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1036403734
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 165
Book Description
This book examines the mediaeval English mystery play, the importance of ritual and archetypes, and how masonic traditions may have been influenced by these mediaeval dramas. Similarly to mystery plays, elements of masonic ceremonial use symbolic characters, archetypes, stories, and rituals to convey moral and spiritual teachings to its members. The rituals are steeped in symbolism and draw on a wide range of historical and cultural sources. Masonic rituals and mediaeval plays both emphasise community and fellowship. This book attempts to highlight the enduring power of symbolic performance, archetypes and the importance of belonging and fellowship in the pursuit of moral and spiritual improvement. The connection between ritual and mediaeval mystery plays is a tantalising subject of much debate, as Freemasonry is a fraternity claimed to have its roots in the mediaeval stonemasons’ guilds, whose members certainly participated in the mystery plays, especially those that depicted biblical stories relating to the building of King Solomon’s temple.

Medieval and Early Modern England on the Contemporary Stage
Author: Marianne Drugeon
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527574997
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 170
Book Description
This volume explores the multiple connections between contemporary British theatre and the medieval and early modern periods. Involving both French and British scholars, as well as playwrights, adapters and stage directors, its scope is political, as it assesses the power of adaptations and history plays to offer a new perspective not only on the past and present, but also on the future. Along the way, burning contemporary social and political issues are explored, such as the place and role of women and ethnic minorities in today’s post-Brexit Britain. The volume builds into a dialogue between the ghosts of the past and their contemporary spectators. Starting with a focus on contemporary adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, then concentrating on contemporary history plays set in the distant past, and ending with the contributions of famous playwrights sharing their experience, the book will be of interest to practitioners, as well as students and researchers in drama and performance studies.

Rituals of Ilé-Ifẹ̀, Nigeria
Author: Morufu B. Omigbule
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 152756956X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 355
Book Description
This book showcases six prominent ritual festivals of Ile-Ifẹ̀, Nigeria: namely Ọ̀rànfè᷂̣, Ìtàpá, Òrìṣàlásẹ̀, Ọbaresé, Òrìṣàkirè and Ọwálàrẹ́. It reveals the hidden and enduring beauties of Ifẹ̀ ritual festivals, providing rare information about the region, the acclaimed origin place and spiritual capital of Yoruba people. Through profound analysis of each of the festivals, it affords information that is unusual in both depth and breadth. The text also provides pace for the views of the practitioners of culture-specific literary-ethnographic scholarship. It, however, pushes the critical edges of its engagement with the ritual festivals and represents an important record of enduring cultural legacies with the unusual capacity to inform about Ifẹ̀ rituals in a way that serves the interest of Yoruba cultural studies in general.

ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 1192
Book Description
"This text has now been revised again to incorporate the latest developments, for instance the current success of children's and crossover literature, such as that of J. K. Rowling and Philip Pullman. However, the Companion also remains faithful to Sir Paul Harvey's original vision of an authoritative work placing English literature in its widest context. No other volume offers such extensive exploration of the classical roots of English literature and the European authors and works that influenced its development." "The appendices have also been updated: the winners of the major literary awards, and the chronology - spanning a thousand years of English literature from Beowulf to Small Island. Informed by the latest scholarly thinking, and comprehensively cross-referenced to guide the reader to topics of related interest, the revised 6th edition reaffirms the pre-eminence of the Companion as the best available single-volume guide to English literature."--BOOK JACKET.
