Book Description
“Brings transparency, honesty, humor, and hope to spouses and family members caring for loved ones with cancer . . . a must-read.” —Shelly Beach, Christy Award-winning author of Ambushed By Grace: Help & Hope on the Caregiving Journey Initially, after David’s diagnosis, I would cringe when I read books or articles by cancer survivors who stated that cancer had been a gift in their lives. How could all that David endured be viewed as a gift? The invasive surgery, the weeks of chemotherapy and radiation: a gift? Yet, after the cancer, David would often reach for my hand and say, “If it is cancer that is responsible for our new relationship, then it was all worth it.” And I’d reluctantly agree that cancer had been a gift in our lives. We’d both seen the other alternative: patients and survivors who had become bitter and angry, and neither one of us wanted to become that. After Mary Potter Kenyon’s husband, David, was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2006, she would serve as his companion during Wednesday chemotherapy treatments, Mary began journaling about their experience as a couple and parents of young children as they navigated the labyrinth of cancer. It soon dawned on her that between working and raising a large family, the two had somehow lost touch with each other over the years—and that things were about to change. Chemo-Therapist: How Cancer Cured a Marriage is a moving and inspiring testimonial of a relationship renewed by the shared experience of a life-threatening illness.

Book Description
It was, truly, a match made in Heaven. When Paul and Becky, two Northwest Michigan high schoolers, met for the first time at a dance, they knew immediately that they would marry. As young marrieds, they faced hard decisions about money, morals, and faith. They also produced six amazing sons, and always a joyful home to raise them in. But the truest test of Paul and Becky's bond came when Becky was diagnosed with breast cancer. What followed in the weeks, months, and years after is a story sure to inspire - about the bravery and selflessness of a woman, the steadfast support of a man, and the knowledge that love and God's love conquer all. "Love your spouse as if today was his or her last day on Earth. One day it will be, and on that day, you'll be at peace." - Paul Wheelock The Leelanau County Cancer Foundation (LCCF) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit with a nine year history of success. Originally LCCF functioned under the name of The Leelanau Cancer Fund working in collaboration with the Munson Regional Healthcare Foundation. In April 2016 the committee members of the LCF chose to establish a new independent organization now known as the Leelanau County Cancer Foundation. The reason for this change was to provide LCCF with more control and accountability regarding the distribution of funds to cancer stricken Leelanau County families regardless of where they were receiving care. (The Munson Foundation would only allow LCF support to families who were being treated at their facilities.) Also, it became clear that there was a growing need to raise more funds to meet the countywide needs. It was felt that the fundraising efforts were losing support because of our affiliation with Munson and their inability to assist Leelanau County cancer patients who were diagnosed and/or treated elsewhere. Being an independent 501(c) 3 provides LCCF the opportunity to expand its fundraising efforts to meet an ever growing need. The Mission of Leelanau County Cancer Foundation "To help improve the quality of life for qualified Leelanau County residents and their families who are being impacted by cancer." The goal of LCCF is to provide needed financial support for Leelanau families for an ever growing variety of needs. To accomplish this goal, LCCF will establish new collaborations with local, state and national charitable organizations which have a knowledge, familiarity or connection to Leelanau County. The Foundation will also strive to build new support from Leelanau County businesses; especially for event sponsorship. LCCF is entirely a volunteer driven organization with no paid staff. It is administered by a Board of Directors; all of whom participate in the organization's annual fund efforts. LCCF will use the funds to support families who have a family member diagnosed with cancer. Funds are used to provide support for non-medical expenses such as rent/mortgage payments, transportation (gas cards) and lodging when necessary for treatments. Additionally, funds have been given to families for general living/housing support such as childcare, electricity, and propane. These grants are aimed at helping alleviate the stress and pressure of a family when a family member has been diagnosed with cancer. Needs can be varied; we have assisted families with financial support for all manner of bills - insurance, phone, propane, electric, mortgage/rent, car payments, taxes... Additionally, we have reimbursed families for gas and lodging when traveling for treatment (primarily to Ann Arbor), one gentleman needed work on his truck and new tires. We have purchased a wheelchair and furniture for other individuals. We have assisted fifty-four families since becoming a not-for-profit organization. Our biggest frustration is letting people know that our organization exists.

Book Description
This book really ought to be read on vacation, just for enjoyment. Granted, cancer is, literally, a deadly serious matter, and cancer research is primarily a part of medicine with Hippocrates in its back ground. Yet, cancer research is also natural science, and as such it yields the joys and sorrows of any science. The cancer problem is also a brain teaser, a challenge for the curious. This introductory report on experimental cancer research is there fore directed to curious students of many disciplines: naturally to medical students, but also to chemists and physicists who have an interest in biological phenomena; biology students will surely en counter pr9blems peculiar to their field in what is supposedly a medi cal one. We have attempted to write without assumptions to a certain degree, for a chemist is essentially in over his head in medicine, and a physician has only the slightest idea of the chemical problems im portant in cancer research. We had no intention of giving a complete view of the field, and from the large number of different lines of development we have chosen only a few. Chemotherapy, as an ex ample, has been treated quite cursorily, along with RNA tumor viruses, although it is possible that just these subjects are especially important for human tumors. Tumor induction via radiation could only be mentioned in passing, in spite of its great practical significance; similarly the role of hormones was only intimated.

Book Description
The award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Children has created an unflinching yet deeply humane portrait of a young family’s journey through a medical crisis, laying bare a couple’s love and fears as they fight for everything that’s important to them. New York, 1993. Alice Culvert is a caring wife, a doting new mother, a loyal friend, and a soulful artist—a fashion designer who wears a baby carrier and haute couture with equal aplomb. In their loft in Manhattan’s gritty Meatpacking District, Alice and her husband, Oliver, are raising their infant daughter, Doe, delighting in the wonders of early parenthood. Their life together feels so vital and full of promise, which makes Alice’s sudden cancer diagnosis especially staggering. In the span of a single day, the couple’s focus narrows to the basic question of her survival. Though they do their best to remain brave, each faces enormous pressure: Oliver tries to navigate a labyrinthine healthcare system and handle their mounting medical bills; Alice tries to be hopeful as her body turns against her. Bracing themselves for the unthinkable, they must confront the new realities of their marriage, their strengths as partners and flaws as people, how to nourish love against all odds, and what it means to truly care for another person. Inspired by the author’s life, Alice & Oliver is a deeply affecting novel written with stunning reserves of compassion, humor, and wisdom. Alice Culvert is an extraordinary character—a woman of incredible heart and spirit—who will remain in memory long after the final page. Praise for Alice & Oliver “This hauntingly powerful novel follows a family’s fight for survival in the face of illness. A stirring elegy to a marriage.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “A rewarding reading experience . . . a testament to the resilience of humans and our willingness to forgive.”—San Francisco Chronicle “The novel’s power is in its two characters’ messy negotiation of their fears, errors and shifting affections. . . . Bock offers a forceful reminder that there are plenty of roiling emotions underneath that till-death-do-us-part.”—Los Angeles Times “[A] heart-wrenching story of a young couple whose lives change when Alice gets diagnosed with cancer . . . a refreshingly unsentimental look at the vicious disease.”—Entertainment Weekly “Alice & Oliver [has a] tough-minded commitment to truth-telling.”—The Washington Post “Even more than the meticulous details of drugs, treatments and side effects, Bock’s tender portrayal of [his characters] in all their desolation gives [Alice & Oliver] its ring of truth. . . . I loved this novel.”—Marion Winik, Newsday “Alice & Oliver shows that, even in a situation that’s about as terrible as it can be, there can still exist happiness, surprise, and life, that strange strong spirit that’s with us until the end.”—The Boston Globe “The most honest, unsentimentally powerful novel about cancer that I’ve ever read.”—Michael Christie, The Globe & Mail “Wrenchingly powerful . . . Bock chronicles the daily struggles of a young wife and mother facing her own imminent mortality. This is a soul portrait of a family in crisis, written with a fearless clarity and a deep understanding of the bonds that can hold two people together even in the darkest hour.”—Richard Price

Book Description
Facing death, the challenges and blessings of marriage come into focus. Pastor Jason Micheli had performed dozens of weddings when he was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Suddenly, his own marriage--and his struggles to live up to its potential--came into sharp relief. Following up on his acclaimed and hilarious memoir, Cancer Is Funny, Micheli chronicles his deep love for his wife, Ali, in Living in Sin. He doesn't deserve her, he knows, but he also knows this: no one deserves the grace that comes in a loving marriage. And that grace is infused into marriage by God alone. Micheli's marriage is tested by cancer, even pushed to the brink. But with wit and biblical insight, he shows how his illness puts a laser focus on what really matters in marriage: forgiveness, laughter, and more forgiveness. Living in Sin will be an inspiration and challenge to any married couple.
