Excerpt from Mansfield College Essays, Presented to the Reverend Andrew Martin Fairbairn, D.D., On the Occasion of His Seventieth Birthday, November 4, 1908: With a Bibliography There are some signs that a gradual revision if not reversal of the general verdict upon John Calvin is in progress; and that we shall witness a determined attempt to do some belated justice to his memory. The material is ready to hand whenever the adventurous historian is forthcoming to do for Calvin what Carlyle did for Cromwell. It is not probable that researches will bring to light many new documents. The archives of Geneva have been explored with thoroughness; and the difficulties of any biographer will lie not in the poverty of his material, but in an embarrassment of riches. Any one who undertakes that formidable task will have need of all his piety; for a whole library of exegetical and theological volumes frowns down at him from shelves where innumerable books repose bearing the quaint legend, "Johannes Calvinus, prompio et sincere in opere Domini." It is difficult to realise, as one's eye runs along the array of folio volumes, that one is regarding the life-work of a man who died at fifty-five, and yet left behind him so portentous a progeny of his brain. We may think what we will of the value of Calvin's theological and political experiments, but it certainly is not open to us to deny the strenuous character of his intellect, nor to depreciate either his industry or his scholarship. By Bartholomew's Day, 24 August, 1662, all ministers and schoolmasters in England and Wales were required by the Act of Uniformity to have given their "unfeigned assent and consent" to the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England. On theological grounds nearly two thousand ministers--approximately one fifth of the clergy of the Church of England--refused to comply and thereby forfeited their livings. This book has been written to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the Great Ejectment. In Part One three early modern historians provide accounts of the antecedents and aftermath of the ejectment in England and Wales, while in Part Two the case is advanced that the negative responses of the ejected ministers to the legal requirements of the Act of Uniformity were rooted in positive doctrinal convictions that are of continuing ecumenical significance.
