Book Description
Jane Austen's Early Works are now a major film! “She was nothing more than a mere good-tempered, civil and obliging Young Woman; as such we could scarcely dislike her -- she was only an Object of Contempt.” - Jane Austen, Love and Freindship Love and Freindship and Other Early Works is a collection of short epistolary stories initially meant to amuse Jane Austen’s family. Austen wrote these stories at the age of 14 and 15 and read them aloud to her family. All the epistolary stories are satirical mocking the 18th-century English society from the mushy love novels to the former kings and queens of England.

Book Description
Today, friendship, love and sexuality are mostly viewed as private, personal and informal relations. In the mediaeval and early modern period, just like in ancient times, this was different. The classical philosophy of friendship (Aristotle) included both friendship and love in the concept of philia. It was also linked to an argument about the virtues needed to become an excellent member of the city state. Thus, close relations were not only thought to be a matter of pleasant gatherings in privacy, but just as much a matter of ethics and politics. What, then, happened to the classical ideas of close relations when they were transmitted to philosophers, clerical and monastic thinkers, state officials or other people in the medieval and early modern period? To what extent did friendship transcend the distinctions between private and public that then existed? How were close relations shaped in practice? Did dialogues with close friends help to contribute to the process of subject-formation in the Renaissance and Enlightenment? To what degree did institutions of power or individual thinkers find it necessary to caution against friendship or love and sexuality?

Book Description
Tucked away in a museum, lies the original notebooks of a teenage Jane Austen. Within the pages can be found the early writings of a girl who would go on to shape the literary landscape for years to come. From movies such as "Clueless" to "Emma", Jane Austen has been inspiring storytellers for over 200 years. 'Love and Friendship' is a collection of short stories from her journals that show the beginnings of some of her best-known stories. Her bold attitude and love of independence shine bright in these early writings. Comprising 'Love and Friendship', 'Lesley Castle', 'The History of England', 'Collection of Letters', and 'Scraps', Austen’s juvenilia offers an entertaining and interesting glimpse into the author’s life. Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most beloved British writers of all time. During her short life she published six novels: ́Sense and Sensibility ́, ́Pride and Prejudice ́, ́Mansfield Park ́, ́Emma ́, ́Northanger Abbey ́ and ́Persuasion ́, that are all considered as literary classics today. Her writing is full of sharp observations on the society in which she evolved, as well as ripe with timeless irony, and a solid dose of humour. She has created immortal characters that have inspired countless authors, novels, and movies such as 'Bridget Jones' and 'Clueless'. The most notable film adapted from a Jane Austen novel is 'Pride and Prejudice' from 2005 starring Keira Knightley ('Pirates of the Caribbean') and Matthew Macfadyen.

***THE NOVEL OF THE HIT INDIE FILM*** 'If, like me, you like your Austen subversive, cruel, funny and outrageous, then you will love Stillman's Love & Friendship' The Times 'Lady Susan is finally getting some long overdue respect' New York Times 'Lady Susan remains deliciously wicked' Vogue With a pitch-perfect Austenian sensibility and wry social commentary, filmmaker and writer Whit Stillman cleverly re-imagines and completes one of our greatest writers' unfinished works. Love & Friendship is a sharp comedy of manners, and a fiendishly funny treat for Austen and Stillman fans alike. JANE AUSTEN'S FUNNIEST NOVEL IS ALSO HER LEAST KNOWN - UNTIL NOW. Impossibly beautiful, disarmingly witty, and completely self-absorbed: meet Lady Susan Vernon, both the heart and the thorn of Love & Friendship. Recently widowed with a daughter who's coming of age as quickly as their funds are dwindling, Lady Susan makes it her mission to find them wealthy husbands - and fast. But when her attempts to secure their futures result only in the wrath of a prominent conquest's wife and the title of 'most accomplished coquette in England', Lady Susan must rethink her strategy. Unannounced, she arrives at her brother-in-law's country estate. Here she intends to take refuge - in no less than luxury, of course - from the colorful rumors trailing her, while finding another avenue to 'I do'. Before the scandalizing gossip can run its course, though, romantic triangles ensue. A SPECIAL EDITION FEATURING JANE AUSTEN'S ORIGINAL NOVELLA AS ANNOTATED BY THE NARRATOR. Book Description
In The Narrow Door, Paul Lisicky creates a compelling collage of scenes and images drawn from two long-term relationships, one with a woman novelist and the other with his ex-husband, a poet. The contours of these relationships shift constantly. Denise and Paul, stretched by the demands of their writing lives, drift apart, and Paul's romance begins to falter. And the world around them is frail: environmental catastrophes like the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti, and local disturbances make an unsettling backdrop to the pressing concerns of Denise's cancer diagnosis and Paul's impending breakup. Lisicky's compassionate heart and resilience seem all the stronger in the face of such searing losses. His survival--hard-won, unsentimental, authentic--proves that in turning toward loss, we embrace life.
